Minecraft Universe: Chapter Two, commonly referred to as Chapter Two, is the second group of films, television series, and animated special presentations in the Minecraft Universe (MIU), an American animated media franchise based on the Minecraft video game. Produced by Mob Studios, Mob Productions, and Mojang Studios, it began with the theatrical film The Wither on October 20, 2034, following the conclusion of Minecraft Universe: Chapter One in Minecraft: The Broken Seed.[1][2]
The chapter is planned to consist of seven films, five Disney+ television projects, and two animated special presentations released through 2038. Its announced films are The Wither, Agent Derp: Stronghold Protocol, Herobrine, Ocean Monument, Minecraft: The Third Dawn, The Far Lands, and Minecraft: World Unmade. Its television slate consists of Stronghold, second seasons of Deep Dark and Bastion, End Cities, and Illagers. The specials are Mushroom Island and The Wandering Trader.[3][4][5]
Chapter Two follows the consequences of the Seed's creative power being distributed among independent systems at the conclusion of Minecraft: The Broken Seed. The Overworld, Nether, End, and Deep Dark remain physically connected, but no central pattern determines which settlement, memory, map, or generated structure is original. Communities begin encountering rejected or reconstructed versions of themselves, while incomplete player memories released during the destruction of the World Loom develop into Herobrine, a figure remembered differently across several civilizations.[6][7]
Mob Studios co-head Alex Brow described the chapter as a transition from Chapter One's conflict over preserving one world into stories concerning "what the world becomes when there is no longer one correct version of it". Lena Cross said the projects would remain connected while using dark fantasy, espionage comedy, psychological horror, political drama, underwater adventure, and exploration fiction as distinct genres.[8][9]
As of January 2035, The Wither had been released, Stronghold was in post-production, and Agent Derp: Stronghold Protocol, Herobrine, and the second season of Deep Dark were in active production. The remaining projects were in development or pre-production.[10]
Development
Planning
Planning for a second chapter began during production of Minecraft: The Second Dawn. Brow, Cross, Naomi Elridge, Jackson Miller, Freddie Goodwin, Owen Mercer, Talia Grant, Priya Desai, Michael Green, and Nia DaCosta participated in a franchise retreat in September 2031 to identify storylines that could continue after Minecraft: The Broken Seed.[11]
The creative team decided that Chapter Two would follow the permanent consequences of the Seed's decentralization rather than introduce another system capable of restoring the previous status quo. Brow said the conclusion of Chapter One required later stories to treat contradictory maps, memories, structures, and identities as normal conditions of the world rather than temporary damage awaiting repair.[8]
The writers selected Herobrine after deciding that the second chapter required a mystery associated with Minecraft folklore but capable of functioning within the established continuity. Mercer proposed connecting the figure to incomplete player memories and reconstruction patterns released by the World Loom instead of presenting Herobrine as an unexplained supernatural duplicate of Steve.[12]
The Wither, Herobrine, Ocean Monument, and The Far Lands had entered development before Chapter Two was formally organized. A sequel to Agent Derp and a direct continuation of Minecraft: The Second Dawn were also in development. The studio used those projects as the chapter's foundation and created Minecraft: World Unmade after determining how their separate conflicts could converge.[13]
Announcement
Mob Studios announced Chapter Two on March 28, 2033, approximately sixteen months before the release of Minecraft: The Broken Seed. The announcement revealed seven films, five television projects, and two special presentations scheduled from 2034 through 2038.[1]
The studio confirmed The Wither as the chapter's opening film after previously developing it without a chapter assignment. The announcement also gave titles to the Agent Derp and Second Dawn sequels and revealed Minecraft: World Unmade as the planned conclusion.[14][15][16][17]
Cross said the studio intended to release no more than two films and two television seasons during a calendar year. She described dates beyond 2036 as provisional and said productions would be delayed rather than compressed when their screenplays or animation required additional work.[18]
Development after The Broken Seed
The released ending of Minecraft: The Broken Seed established the chapter's central world state. The Seed is distributed among the Overworld relay, Nether routes, End gravity towers, Deep Dark archive, Dawnstead records, and Obsidian Bureau strongholds. A post-credits scene reveals a discarded player pattern outside that network, where a white-eyed figure resembling Steve places the first block of an unidentified structure.[19]
After the film's release, Miller, Goodwin, Elridge, Mercer, Grant, and Desai conducted a continuity review to ensure that the separate Chapter Two projects used the distributed Seed consistently. The review established that communities can retain contradictory histories without either version automatically disappearing, while generated individuals are considered independently alive when they develop beyond their source pattern.[20]
Miller remained attached to direct Minecraft: The Third Dawn and Minecraft: World Unmade, but said he would not oversee every project as a de facto director. Brow, Cross, and Elridge continued coordinating the chapter through Mob Studios' central story group.[21]
Production status
The Wither completed production in August 2034 and was released on October 20. Stronghold completed principal voice recording in June 2034 and principal animation in November; post-production was underway for its March 2035 premiere.[22][23]
Principal voice recording for Agent Derp: Stronghold Protocol began in August 2034, followed by animation in December. Herobrine completed its production screenplay in November 2034 and began voice recording in January 2035. Voice recording for the second season of Deep Dark began in September 2034, with animation beginning that December.[24][25][26]
Mushroom Island entered animation in October 2034. Ocean Monument and the second season of Bastion were in pre-production, while End Cities, Minecraft: The Third Dawn, The Wandering Trader, The Far Lands, Illagers, and Minecraft: World Unmade remained in development.[10]
Overarching storyline
Chapter Two begins after the World Loom is destroyed and the Seed no longer generates the dimensions from one central pattern. The world remains habitable, but locations can retain incompatible histories, structures may emerge from rejected generation patterns, and communities can remember people or events absent from neighboring settlements.[6]
The first portion of the chapter focuses on immediate consequences. The Wither concerns soul sand and trapped memories released beneath damaged settlements. Stronghold and Agent Derp: Stronghold Protocol examine abandoned strongholds that recognize nonexistent Obsidian Bureau agents, while the second season of Deep Dark follows sculk reproducing voices belonging to people who never entered the ancient city.
Herobrine emerges from player memories and crafting records released when the World Loom collapsed. Different settlements remember the figure as a founder, enemy, protector, missing resident, or earlier form of Steve. The chapter investigates whether these memories describe one individual, several reconstructed people, or a generative process attempting to create a player capable of restoring one authoritative history.[7]
Ocean Monument, the second season of Bastion, and End Cities expand civilizations that remained outside Chapter One's dominant maps. Their inhabitants have developed separate methods for surviving changing geography, routes, gravity, and historical records.
Minecraft: The Third Dawn and The Far Lands concern competing versions of the world. The former follows settlements constructed from memories rejected by Dawnstead, while the latter explores terrain composed from unfinished and discarded generation patterns.
Minecraft: World Unmade is intended to bring the chapter's conflicts together after incompatible versions of the dimensions begin generating simultaneously. The central characters attempt to create a world capable of retaining contradictory histories without allowing any version to overwrite the others.[27]
Brow said Chapter Two would not repeat Chapter One by revealing another central machine behind every conflict. Its larger story instead develops through contradictory evidence, with each production offering a different explanation for Herobrine and the world's unstable generation.[8]

The Wither
The Wither opened Chapter Two on October 20, 2034. Directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson from a screenplay by Celia North, the dark-fantasy film follows Sola, Garrick, and Edda after soul-sand formations appear beneath settlements damaged during Minecraft: The Broken Seed.[2]
The group discovers that an earlier player civilization attempted to construct a living weapon from trapped souls and abandoned the experiment after it began consuming memories as well as life. The film establishes that matter released by the World Loom can preserve emotional and historical fragments independently of the people from whom they originated.[31]
Michelle Yeoh, Brian Tyree Henry, and Bella Ramsey reprise their roles as Sola, Garrick, and Edda. The film was originally developed without a chapter assignment before being repositioned as the first Chapter Two production.[32][14]
Agent Derp: Stronghold Protocol
The sequel to Agent Derp is scheduled for August 15, 2035. Jackson Gold returns as director and producer, with Goodwin writing the screenplay. Scott Menville, Jenny Slate, and John Boyega reprise their roles as Derp, Cipher, and Flint.[15]
The film follows Agent D-0 after the reformed Obsidian Bureau discovers that abandoned strongholds have begun issuing orders under the identities of agents who never existed. Derp investigates the false operatives while attempting to prove that his improvised methods can function inside a legitimate emergency organization.[33]
Gold said the sequel would not repeat the mistaken-agent premise of the first film. Its conflict concerns Derp learning how to retain his identity after receiving the authority he previously impersonated. The film follows the Disney+ series Stronghold, which introduces the false-agent network and the first reactivated facilities.[34]
Principal voice recording began in August 2034. Menville, Slate, Boyega, Patti Harrison, and Giancarlo Esposito participated in the first recording period, while principal animation began in December.[24]
Herobrine
Herobrine is scheduled for November 7, 2035. Owen Mercer directs and co-wrote the film with Talia Grant. The psychological dark-fantasy story follows Nia Vale, Lyra, and Oren as they investigate a player-shaped figure appearing simultaneously in settlements whose residents possess conflicting memories of Steve and Alex.[28]
Mob Studios described Herobrine as neither an alternate Steve nor a conventionally resurrected player. The character is assembled from memories, crafting records, and reconstruction patterns released during the collapse of the World Loom. Several settlements remember Herobrine as their original builder despite no physical evidence that one person could have lived in all of them.[7]
Ayo Edebiri, Jodie Comer, and Ke Huy Quan lead the film as Nia, Lyra, and Oren. Taron Egerton and Florence Pugh return as Steve and Alex in supporting roles.[35]
The film establishes the chapter's principal mystery without positioning Herobrine as the direct antagonist of every later production. Its production screenplay was completed in November 2034, and principal voice recording began in January 2035.[25]
Ocean Monument
Ocean Monument is scheduled for July 17, 2036. DaCosta directs from a screenplay by Desai. The underwater adventure follows Mina Quill, Nia, and Lyra after newly generated oceans cover routes and settlements that previously existed on land.[29]
The characters discover a submerged civilization that survived earlier Seed fractures by transferring its structures into a network of ocean monuments protected by Guardians. The civilization refuses contact with the surface after learning that every reconstructed version of the Overworld places its territory in a different location.[36]
The Elder Guardians are depicted as defensive mechanisms maintaining the boundary between the monument network and an unstable region beneath the ocean floor. Stephanie Hsu, Edebiri, and Comer are expected to reprise their roles.[37]
Visual development began in 2033. Pre-production expanded after Minecraft: The Broken Seed established mixed-dimensional regions, and principal voice recording is scheduled to begin in mid-2035.[38]
Minecraft: The Third Dawn
The direct sequel to Minecraft: The Second Dawn is scheduled for June 18, 2037. Miller returns to direct and co-write with Goodwin, with Brow, Elridge, and Cross producing. Egerton and Pugh are confirmed to return as Steve and Alex.[16]
The film follows communities constructing different versions of the same settlements from memories released by Dawnstead. Steve and Alex attempt to prevent conflict between inhabitants who believe their version of the Overworld is original, while Herobrine possesses memories that both players rejected during the destruction of the Dawn Engine.[39]
Miller said the title does not refer to another artificial sunrise. The "third dawn" represents a world created after both the natural Overworld and Dawnstead's reconstructed version have become impossible to restore completely.[40]
Hsu, Edebiri, Comer, and Andrew Scott are expected to return as Mina, Nia, Lyra, and Alden, though Mob Studios said Scott's role would not undo Alden's disappearance.[41]
The Far Lands
The Far Lands is scheduled for November 19, 2037. Edwards directs from a screenplay by Green and North. The exploration film follows Alex, Cael, Serai, Nia, and a group of cartographers traveling beyond the stable generated Overworld after maps begin extending into terrain that should not physically exist.[30]
The expedition encounters vertical oceans, repeated biomes, settlements constructed from unfinished block patterns, and inhabitants who experience distance differently. The Far Lands contain portions of world generation rejected by the Seed, including incomplete versions of the Nether and End.[42]
Pugh, Riz Ahmed, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Edebiri are expected to return as Alex, Cael, Serai, and Nia. Edwards described the film as a large-scale environmental mystery rather than a conventional journey toward one destination.[43]
Minecraft: World Unmade
Minecraft: World Unmade is scheduled for December 15, 2038, and is intended to conclude Chapter Two. Miller directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with Goodwin and Elridge.[17]
The film brings together characters from the Overworld, Nether, End, Deep Dark, ocean monuments, strongholds, and Far Lands after incompatible versions of the world begin generating simultaneously. The central characters attempt to create a world capable of retaining contradictory histories without allowing one version to overwrite the others.[27]
Herobrine's connection to the discarded player memories becomes central to the conflict, though Brow said the character would not function as a replacement for the Hollow King. Mob Studios has not announced a complete cast; Egerton, Pugh, Hsu, Edebiri, Yeoh, Henry, Dev Patel, Mbatha-Raw, Menville, Slate, Boyega, Ramsey, Comer, Ahmed, and Quan are expected to return.[44]
The film remains in story development. Miller, Goodwin, and Elridge completed an initial treatment in October 2034, but the studio does not expect a production screenplay before the principal narratives of Herobrine, Ocean Monument, and The Far Lands are finalized.[45]

Stronghold
Stronghold is a six-episode espionage mystery series scheduled to run from March 7 through April 11, 2035. Cipher and Flint lead an investigation into dormant Obsidian Bureau facilities that reactivate with personnel records belonging to nonexistent agents. Derp appears in a recurring role, while Giancarlo Esposito returns as former director Obsidian.[46]
The series takes place before Agent Derp: Stronghold Protocol and establishes the false-agent network used in the film. Grant serves as creator and showrunner.[47]
Jenny Slate, John Boyega, and Giancarlo Esposito lead the voice cast, with Scott Menville and Patti Harrison recurring as Derp and Needle. The series completed voice recording in June 2034 and principal animation in November.[48][23]
Deep Dark season two
The second season of Deep Dark consists of eight episodes scheduled from February 6 through March 27, 2036. Mercer returns as showrunner. Henry, Ramsey, Jessie Buckley, and Winston Duke reprise their roles as Garrick, Edda, Mara Flint, and Torren.[49]
The season follows the expedition after sculk begins reproducing voices belonging to people who never entered the ancient city. Edda discovers that the network is receiving memories and incomplete identities released during the collapse of the World Loom, including repeated references to Herobrine.[50]
Principal voice recording began in September 2034, with animation commencing in December. Mercer said the season would retain the first season's sound-driven horror while expanding the ancient city into regions generated from several incompatible histories.[26]
Bastion season two
The second season of Bastion consists of eight episodes scheduled from October 9 through November 27, 2036. Grant returns as creator and showrunner, with Dev Patel, Gwendoline Christie, Lupita Nyong'o, Indira Varma, and David Oyelowo expected to return.[51]
The season follows the Nether council after displaced Overworld communities seek access to stable Nether territory. Ruun and Brakka disagree over whether the council's voluntary structure can survive a migration crisis, while Varka discovers records of an earlier Piglin settlement generated beyond the known Nether.[52]
The season entered pre-production in November 2034. Grant and DaCosta are coordinating its portal geography with Ocean Monument and the mixed regions established by Minecraft: The Broken Seed.[53]
End Cities
End Cities is a six-episode adventure drama scheduled from April 9 through May 14, 2037. Mbatha-Raw and Ahmed are expected to lead the series as Serai and Cael.[54]
The series follows End-born travelers establishing contact among settlements whose gravity systems and chorus archives developed independently after the destruction of the Ender Crown. Some communities reject the shared archive created during The Ender Crown and believe the End should abandon its recovered history.[55]
Elridge serves as creator and showrunner. Development began with a writers' room in October 2034, and the series is intended to establish locations and characters used by The Far Lands and Minecraft: World Unmade.[56]
Illagers
Illagers is an eight-episode political fantasy series scheduled from February 11 through March 31, 2038. Desai serves as creator and showrunner.[57]
The series explores the separate Illager orders introduced in Villagers and their belief that unrestricted construction damages the world's intended generation. Its principal character is an Illager archivist who discovers that the movement's oldest prophecies describe Herobrine as a builder capable of restoring the first version of the Overworld.[58]
Quan, Yeoh, Edebiri, and Richard Ayoade are expected to appear as Oren, Sola, Nia, and Moss. Mob Studios has not announced the actor portraying the archivist.[59]
Special presentations
Mob Studios announced two animated special presentations for Disney+.[5]
Mushroom Island
Mushroom Island is scheduled for December 19, 2035. The comedy special follows Derp and Needle after an accidental portal transports an Obsidian Bureau evidence shipment to an isolated mushroom island whose residents have never encountered hostile mobs.[60]
Menville and Patti Harrison reprise their roles. The evidence shipment contains objects generated from strongholds investigated in Stronghold and Agent Derp: Stronghold Protocol, though the special is intended to function as a self-contained comedy.[61]
The special entered animation in October 2034 and is being produced concurrently with Agent Derp: Stronghold Protocol.[62]
The Wandering Trader
The Wandering Trader is scheduled for July 8, 2037. The adventure special follows Moss as he attempts to complete a trade route crossing several newly generated versions of the Overworld.[63]
Ayoade reprises the role, with Quan and Michaela Coel appearing as Oren and Tamsin. Each version of the route recognizes different currencies, settlements, and relationships, forcing Moss to determine whether completing the trade requires choosing one history over the others.[64]
The special connects the Overworld storylines of Minecraft: The Third Dawn and The Far Lands without functioning as required viewing for either film.
Timeline
Chapter Two's release order broadly follows its fictional chronology. The Wither begins several months after Minecraft: The Broken Seed. Stronghold and Agent Derp: Stronghold Protocol occur next, while Herobrine follows the public discovery of contradictory player memories.
Mushroom Island takes place after Stronghold Protocol. The second season of Deep Dark occurs after Herobrine, while Ocean Monument and the second season of Bastion follow different consequences of the changing Overworld and dimensional routes.
End Cities precedes Minecraft: The Third Dawn. The Wandering Trader occurs between The Third Dawn and The Far Lands. Illagers is expected to be the final television project before Minecraft: World Unmade.

Themes and influences
Chapter Two continues the franchise's themes of construction, identity, memory, infrastructure, and political authority. Its central question concerns whether several contradictory versions of a world can remain valid without being merged into one official history.
Herobrine represents the danger and possibility of identities created from incomplete records. Mercer said the character is frightening because different communities possess sincere evidence of incompatible relationships with him, rather than because he can imitate Steve's appearance.[12]
The chapter's institutions respond differently to instability. The Obsidian Bureau attempts to verify identities through records, the Deep Dark stores every vibration without determining truth, the Nether council negotiates access through voluntary agreements, the End cities debate whether history should be shared, and the Illagers argue that unrestricted building creates the instability itself.
Brow compared the Far Lands and ocean monument storylines to the discovery of societies excluded from official maps. Cross said their inclusion was intended to prevent Chapter Two from becoming solely a mystery about Herobrine and to continue treating dimensions and settlements as cultures rather than visual locations.[9]
Future
Minecraft: World Unmade is intended to conclude the announced Chapter Two storyline in December 2038. Mob Studios has not announced whether the Minecraft Universe will continue with a third chapter.[17]
Brow said the conclusion would not rebuild the original Seed or reduce the world to one stable timeline. The studio is developing several concepts that could continue beyond Chapter Two, but no project has been assigned to a later chapter.[65]
