Minecraft Universe: Chapter Two, commonly referred to as Chapter Two, is the second group of films, television series, and animated special presentations in the Minecraft Universe (MIU), an American animated media franchise based on the Minecraft video game. Produced by Mob Studios, Mob Productions, and Mojang Studios, it began with the theatrical film The Wither on October 20, 2034, following the conclusion of Minecraft Universe: Chapter One in Minecraft: The Broken Seed. The Disney+ miniseries Stronghold became the chapter's first television project in March 2035.[1][2][3]

Following a major restructuring announced on June 18, 2035, the chapter is planned to consist of ten films, eight television seasons across six series, and two animated special presentations released through 2040. Every unreleased project was delayed. Mob Studios also replaced the director and writing team of Agent Derp: Stronghold Protocol, retitled the Herobrine film Minecraft: The Man Who Wasn't There, and added Minecraft: Ashes of the Nether, Minecraft: The Lost Village, and Minecraft: Echoes of the End to the film slate.[4][5][6]

Chapter Two follows the consequences of the Seed's creative power being distributed among independent systems at the conclusion of Minecraft: The Broken Seed. The Overworld, Nether, End, and Deep Dark remain connected, but no central pattern determines which settlement, memory, map, or generated structure is original. Communities encounter rejected or reconstructed versions of themselves, while incomplete player records released during the destruction of the World Loom develop into a figure whose conflicting identities form the basis of Minecraft: The Man Who Wasn't There.[7][8]

Mob Studios co-head Alex Brow described the chapter as a transition from Chapter One's conflict over preserving one world into stories concerning what happens when several contradictory worlds must coexist. Lena Cross said the June 2035 delays were intended to reduce overlapping animation schedules and prevent announced dates from controlling the development of unfinished stories.[9][10]

As of November 2037, The Wither, Stronghold, Mushroom Island, Agent Derp: Stronghold Protocol, the second season of Deep Dark, Minecraft: The Man Who Wasn't There, the second season of Bastion, and Ocean Monument had been released. Ocean Monument grossed $1.341 billion worldwide, becoming the chapter's highest-grossing film, while Deep Dark season two remained its highest-rated television season by Metacritic score. Minecraft: Ashes of the Nether and End Cities were in production or post-production, while the remaining projects were in development or pre-production.[11][12][13]

Planning and announcement[edit | edit source]

Planning for a second chapter began during production of Minecraft: The Second Dawn. Brow, Cross, Naomi Elridge, Jackson Miller, Freddie Goodwin, Owen Mercer, Talia Grant, Priya Desai, Michael Green, and Nia DaCosta participated in a franchise retreat in September 2031 to identify stories that could continue after Minecraft: The Broken Seed.[14]

The creative team decided that Chapter Two would follow the permanent consequences of the Seed's decentralization rather than introduce another system capable of restoring the previous status quo. Mercer proposed connecting the chapter's player mystery to incomplete memories and crafting records released by the World Loom instead of presenting Herobrine as an unexplained duplicate of Steve.[15]

Mob Studios announced Chapter Two on March 28, 2033, with seven films, five television projects, and two special presentations scheduled through 2038. The Wither, Herobrine, Ocean Monument, an Agent Derp sequel, and a direct continuation of Minecraft: The Second Dawn were already in development before the chapter was formally organized.[1][16]

June 2035 restructuring[edit | edit source]

After Stronghold concluded, Mob Studios reviewed every unreleased Chapter Two project. Cross said several productions were competing for the same senior animators, environment teams, and continuity staff, while later projects were being written around dates announced before their premises had fully developed.[10]

On June 18, 2035, the studio delayed every unreleased film, television season, and special presentation. The revised calendar extended Chapter Two from 2038 to 2040 and reduced the number of major releases scheduled within the same six-month period.[4][17]

Agent Derp: Stronghold Protocol moved from August 15, 2035, to June 19, 2036. Alex Brow replaced Jackson Gold as director, while Brow, Talia Grant, and Owen Mercer replaced Goodwin as screenwriters. Gold and Goodwin retained story credit for the earlier version. Brow said he took the helm to "ensure it is a quality that meets a standard like the previous few films that have been released".[18][19]

The film previously titled Herobrine was renamed Minecraft: The Man Who Wasn't There and moved from November 7, 2035, to October 16, 2036. Mercer said the new title better reflected a mystery in which settlements remember the same player as several incompatible people rather than a conventional monster story.[6]

Mob Studios added three films: Minecraft: Ashes of the Nether, Minecraft: The Lost Village, and Minecraft: Echoes of the End. It also ordered a third season of Villagers, a third season of Deep Dark, and a second season of End Cities.[5][20]

The Wither was released in October 2034, and Stronghold ran from March through April 2035. Both received positive reviews, with Stronghold becoming the best-reviewed project of the franchise by Rotten Tomatoes score at the time of its release.[21][22]

Production on the original version of Agent Derp: Stronghold Protocol was paused in April 2035 after an internal assembly. Brow, Grant, and Mercer completed a replacement screenplay in August, voice recording resumed in September, and principal animation restarted in October. The released film opened in July 2036 and grossed $1.060 billion worldwide.[18][23][24]

Mushroom Island was released on Disney+ in February 2036. The second season of Deep Dark ran from September through October, and Minecraft: The Man Who Wasn't There opened theatrically on October 16 before completing its run with $1.286 billion worldwide.[25][26][27][28][29]

The second season of Bastion completed post-production in April 2037 and ran from May 7 through June 25. Ocean Monument completed principal animation in April, post-production in June, and opened theatrically on July 16. Its theatrical run concluded on November 14 with $1.341 billion worldwide.[30][31][32][33][34][12]

As of November 2037, Minecraft: Ashes of the Nether was in principal animation and End Cities had begun its first-season release. The remaining films, series, and special presentation were in development or pre-production.[11]

Overarching storyline[edit | edit source]

Chapter Two begins after the World Loom is destroyed and the Seed no longer generates the dimensions from one central pattern. The world remains habitable, but locations can retain incompatible histories, structures may emerge from rejected generation patterns, and communities can remember people or events absent from neighboring settlements.[7]

The first group of projects concerns immediate consequences. The Wither follows memories trapped in soul sand; Stronghold and Agent Derp: Stronghold Protocol concern records that generate Obsidian Bureau operatives; Minecraft: The Man Who Wasn't There investigates contradictory memories of an unidentified player; and Deep Dark season two follows sculk receiving memories from people and settlements that were possible before the Seed's power was divided but never existed in the surviving world.

Ocean Monument, Ashes of the Nether, The Lost Village, Echoes of the End, Bastion, and End Cities expand societies that maintained their own histories outside Chapter One's dominant maps. Minecraft: The Third Dawn and The Far Lands concern competing versions of the Overworld and terrain generated from discarded world patterns.

Minecraft: World Unmade is intended to bring the chapter's conflicts together after incompatible versions of the dimensions begin generating simultaneously. Brow said the chapter would not reveal another single machine responsible for every conflict; its larger story develops through competing records and communities rather than one authoritative explanation.[35][9]

Released on October 20, 2034, The Wither follows Sola, Garrick, and Edda after soul sand containing discarded memories spreads beneath settlements damaged during Minecraft: The Broken Seed. Jennifer Yuh Nelson directed the film from a screenplay by North.[2]

The film grossed $947.4 million worldwide and received praise for its horror-influenced animation, performances, and treatment of memory and identity.[36][21]

Agent Derp: Stronghold Protocol[edit | edit source]

After Director Zero escapes into the stronghold network and begins replacing public records, infrastructure, and memories, Derp, Cipher, and Flint must prevent the Stronghold Protocol from reducing Bureau personnel and entire settlements to identities selected by an emergency command system.

The film was originally scheduled for August 15, 2035, with Jackson Gold directing and Goodwin writing. Production was paused in April 2035 after an internal assembly, and Brow took over as director in June with Grant and Mercer joining him on the replacement screenplay. The new version made Derp's contradictory personnel history the reason the Protocol could not replace him consistently, retained the generated operatives from Stronghold, and rebuilt most of the second and third acts.[18][23]

Voice recording resumed in September 2035, animation restarted in October, and production concluded on June 20, 2036. The film premiered at the Dolby Theatre on June 28 and was released on July 10.[37][38]

Agent Derp: Stronghold Protocol received positive reviews for Brow's direction, Scott Menville and Jenny Slate's performances, animation, action, and integration of physical comedy with the identity conflict. It grossed $418.7 million in the United States and Canada and $641.5 million in other territories, for $1.060 billion worldwide, becoming the chapter's first billion-dollar film.[39][24]

Nia Vale, Lyra, and Oren investigate settlements whose inhabitants remember the same white-eyed player as a founder, enemy, protector, and missing relative. The figure, known as Herobrine, is revealed to be an identity assembled by the World Loom from incompatible player memories, construction histories, and blank profiles rather than one original player.

Mercer directed and co-wrote the film with Grant. Ayo Edebiri, Jodie Comer, and Ke Huy Quan lead the cast as Nia, Lyra, and Oren, with Andrew Scott voicing Herobrine. Taron Egerton and Florence Pugh return as Steve and Alex, while Stephanie Hsu, Bella Ramsey, and Michelle Yeoh appear in supporting roles.[40][41]

The film was originally announced as Herobrine and scheduled for November 7, 2035. It was retitled and delayed to October 16, 2036, during the June 2035 restructuring. Principal animation concluded in July 2036, post-production concluded in September, and it premiered at the TCL Chinese Theatre on October 10.[6][42]

Minecraft: The Man Who Wasn't There received positive reviews for Mercer's direction, Edebiri, Comer, Quan, and Scott's performances, the mystery structure, overlapping settlement animation, score, and treatment of collective memory. It earned 92% on Rotten Tomatoes and 82 out of 100 on Metacritic. The film grossed $482.3 million in the United States and Canada and $803.7 million in other territories, for $1.286 billion worldwide, becoming Chapter Two's highest-grossing film through December 2036.[43][29]

Ocean Monument[edit | edit source]

Newly generated oceans cover routes and settlements that previously existed on land, leading Mina Quill, Nia Vale, Lyra, and Herobrine to Pelagos, a civilization preserved inside a vast ocean monument. Pelagos's leaders seek to restore the dry coastline described by their oldest map, although doing so would erase surface communities and exclude monument residents born after the city was submerged.

DaCosta directed from a screenplay by Desai. Stephanie Hsu, Ayo Edebiri, and Jodie Comer lead the cast, with Andrew Scott, Daniel Kaluuya, Lupita Nyong'o, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Angela Bassett, Ke Huy Quan, and Michelle Yeoh in supporting roles.[44]

The film was delayed from July 17, 2036, to July 16, 2037, during the June 2035 restructuring. Principal voice recording concluded in December 2036, principal animation was completed in April 2037, and post-production concluded in June.[45][33]

Ocean Monument received positive reviews for DaCosta's direction, Hsu, Edebiri, Comer, Kaluuya, Nyong'o, Abdul-Mateen, and Bassett, the design of Pelagos, underwater animation, score, and treatment of disputed territory. It earned 91% on Rotten Tomatoes and 80 out of 100 on Metacritic. The film grossed $509.8 million in the United States and Canada and $831.2 million in other territories, for $1.341 billion worldwide, becoming Chapter Two's highest-grossing film through November 2037.[46][12]

Minecraft: Ashes of the Nether[edit | edit source]

Ruun and Brakka confront a Piglin settlement generated from the Nether's discarded history after its residents claim that the representative council destroyed their original civilization.

Grant and North are writing the film. Mob Studios had not announced a director or principal cast beyond the expected returns of Dev Patel and Gwendoline Christie. It is scheduled for March 17, 2038.[47]

Minecraft: The Lost Village[edit | edit source]

Sola, Oren, Tamsin, and Nia search for a village that appears on every new map despite no traveler being able to reach or remember it.

Elridge is set to direct and co-write with Desai. The film is scheduled for September 15, 2038 and continues storylines from Villagers season three.[48]

Minecraft: Echoes of the End[edit | edit source]

Serai and Cael investigate End cities that begin receiving memories from islands which were never generated in the surviving dimension.

Edwards is set to direct from a screenplay by Green and Elridge. Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Riz Ahmed are expected to return. The film is scheduled for April 20, 2039.[49]

Minecraft: The Third Dawn[edit | edit source]

Steve and Alex attempt to prevent conflict among settlements constructed from different memories of the same world.

Miller returns to direct and co-write with Goodwin. The film was delayed to July 19, 2039.[50]

Alex, Cael, Serai, Nia, and a group of cartographers travel beyond stable world generation into terrain assembled from unfinished and rejected patterns.

Characters from the Overworld, Nether, End, Deep Dark, strongholds, ocean monuments, and Far Lands confront several incompatible versions of the world generating simultaneously.

Stronghold[edit | edit source]

The six-episode miniseries follows Cipher and Flint after dormant Obsidian Bureau facilities recognize agents whom nobody remembers. It premiered on Disney+ on March 7, 2035, and concluded on April 11.[3][53]

The series received critical acclaim and leads directly into Agent Derp: Stronghold Protocol.[22]

Deep Dark seasons two and three[edit | edit source]

The second season is set after Minecraft: The Broken Seed, The Wither, and Agent Derp: Stronghold Protocol. It follows Edda, Garrick, Mara Flint, and Torren after sculk begins reproducing voices belonging to people who never entered the Deep Dark and memories of settlements that never existed in the surviving world. Their investigation reveals that the division of the Seed's power caused the sculk network to receive unrealized histories, which combine into a collective intelligence known as the Chorus.

Bella Ramsey assumes the season's central role as Edda, with Brian Tyree Henry, Jessie Buckley, Winston Duke, and Ralph Ineson returning. Dev Patel, Naomi Ackie, and Chiwetel Ejiofor joined the cast as acoustic cartographer Iven Rook, Hollow Reach leader Sera Vale, and the Chorus, respectively.[54]

The season premiered on Disney+ on September 4, 2036, and released eight episodes weekly through October 23. It received critical acclaim, earning 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and 86 out of 100 on Metacritic. Critics praised Ramsey, Ackie, Patel, and Ejiofor, the sound design, animation of the unheard city, expanded role of the Warden, and the finale's Silent Archive. Criticism focused on the density of its rules governing memories, possible histories, and generated identities.[26][27][13]

Disney+ reported that the premiere was viewed by 13.1 million accounts worldwide during its first five days, while the finale was viewed by 15.4 million accounts during the same measurement period. The season received a 95% verified audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.[55][56]

A third season was announced for September 2039 and is scheduled to release eight episodes through October 25. Mercer is expected to return as showrunner, with Ramsey expected to reprise Edda. It will be set after Minecraft: Echoes of the End, although its complete premise had not been disclosed as of October 2036.[20][57]

Bastion season two[edit | edit source]

The second season follows the Nether council after settlements displaced by unstable Overworld terrain seek permanent refuge in Piglin territory. Ruun, Brakka, Varka, Tala, and Orun must create residency for people whose home coordinates no longer exist without allocating land the council does not own or repeating the displacement of Piglin communities.

Dev Patel, Gwendoline Christie, Lupita Nyong'o, Indira Varma, and David Oyelowo returned, with Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sterling K. Brown, and Zazie Beetz joining the principal cast. Talia Grant returned as creator and showrunner.[58]

The season ran for eight episodes from May 7 through June 25, 2037. It received critical acclaim, earning 94% on Rotten Tomatoes and 83 out of 100 on Metacritic. Critics praised Grant's writing, Patel, Christie, Nyong'o, Brown, Beetz, and Ejiofor, the migration and residency storyline, sanctuary-camp design, and the Common Residency Charter conclusion.[31][32][59]

Disney+ reported that the premiere was viewed by 11.9 million accounts worldwide during its first five days, while the finale was viewed by 14.4 million accounts during the same measurement period. Mob Studios had not renewed the series for a third season as of November 2037.[60][61]

End Cities[edit | edit source]

The first season follows End-born travelers establishing contact among settlements whose gravity systems and chorus archives developed independently after the destruction of the Ender Crown. It was delayed to November 5, 2037.[62]

A second season was announced for February 2040. Its story had not been disclosed as of June 2035.[20]

Villagers season three[edit | edit source]

The third season follows Sola's settlement as several villages claim incompatible ownership of the same farms, roads, and family histories. It is scheduled to premiere on April 14, 2038 and leads into Minecraft: The Lost Village.[63]

Illagers[edit | edit source]

The series follows Illager orders that believe unrestricted construction damages the world's intended generation. It was delayed to October 6, 2038.[64]

Mushroom Island[edit | edit source]

Derp and Needle attempt to recover an Obsidian Bureau evidence shipment from an isolated mushroom island whose residents have never encountered hostile mobs. The special was released on Disney+ on February 13, 2036, and takes place between Stronghold and Agent Derp: Stronghold Protocol.[65][25]

The Wandering Trader[edit | edit source]

Moss attempts to complete a trade route crossing several newly generated versions of the Overworld. The special was delayed to February 16, 2038.[66]

Timeline[edit | edit source]

The chapter's release order broadly follows its fictional chronology. The Wither begins after Minecraft: The Broken Seed, followed by Stronghold, Mushroom Island, and Agent Derp: Stronghold Protocol. Deep Dark season two and Minecraft: The Man Who Wasn't There independently develop the chapter's memory and identity mysteries.

Later productions expand the Nether, villages, ocean monuments, End cities, and Far Lands before Minecraft: World Unmade concludes the announced storyline.

Commercial performance[edit | edit source]

The first four Chapter Two films grossed a combined $4.6344 billion worldwide against combined production budgets of $805 million. The Wither grossed $947.4 million worldwide against a $175 million budget, Agent Derp: Stronghold Protocol grossed $1.060 billion against $195 million, Minecraft: The Man Who Wasn't There grossed $1.286 billion against $210 million, and Ocean Monument grossed $1.341 billion against $225 million.[36][24][67][29][68][12][69]

Stronghold Protocol became the chapter's first billion-dollar film. The Man Who Wasn't There overtook it as the chapter's highest-grossing release before Ocean Monument reached $1.341 billion. Ocean Monument also delivered the chapter's largest worldwide opening at $365.1 million.[70][71][72][73]

Critical and public response[edit | edit source]

The Wither received positive reviews, earning 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and 78 out of 100 on Metacritic. Critics praised Jennifer Yuh Nelson's direction, horror-influenced animation, performances, and treatment of memory and identity.[21]

Stronghold received critical acclaim, earning 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and 84 out of 100 on Metacritic. It was praised for its mystery structure, generated-agent storyline, performances, and conclusion.[22]

Agent Derp: Stronghold Protocol earned 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and 77 out of 100 on Metacritic. Critics praised Brow's production overhaul, Menville and Slate, the animation, action, and the decision to center the revised story on Derp's contradictory identity. Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an "A" grade, while PostTrak reported a 92% positive score and 79% definite recommendation.[39][74]

The second season of Deep Dark earned 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and 86 out of 100 on Metacritic, making it the chapter's highest-rated television season by Metacritic score and tying Stronghold as its highest-rated television release by Rotten Tomatoes percentage. Critics praised Ramsey's lead performance, Ackie, Patel, Ejiofor, the sound design, the unheard-city animation, and the Silent Archive conclusion. It received a 95% verified audience score.[13][56]

Minecraft: The Man Who Wasn't There earned 92% on Rotten Tomatoes and 82 out of 100 on Metacritic. Critics praised Mercer's direction, Edebiri, Comer, Quan, Scott, the overlapping settlement animation, mystery structure, and decision to treat Herobrine as an identity formed after the evidence rather than an evil duplicate of Steve. Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an "A" grade, while PostTrak reported a 93% positive score and 81% definite recommendation.[43][75]

The second season of Bastion earned 94% on Rotten Tomatoes and 83 out of 100 on Metacritic. Critics praised its treatment of refuge, residency, host-community consent, and the Guest Chain, while some found its legal and portal terminology overly dense.[59]

Ocean Monument earned 91% on Rotten Tomatoes and 80 out of 100 on Metacritic. Critics praised DaCosta, Hsu, Edebiri, Comer, Kaluuya, Nyong'o, Abdul-Mateen, Bassett, Pelagos, the underwater animation, and the negotiated coastline ending. Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an "A" grade, while PostTrak reported a 93% positive score and 80% definite recommendation.[46][76]

Themes and influences[edit | edit source]

Chapter Two continues the franchise's themes of construction, identity, memory, infrastructure, and political authority. Its central question concerns whether several contradictory versions of a world can remain valid without being merged into one official history.

Minecraft: The Man Who Wasn't There represents the chapter's central identity mystery. Mercer said the figure is unsettling because different communities possess sincere evidence of incompatible relationships with him, rather than because he simply resembles Steve.[15]

The additional films announced in June 2035 broaden the chapter beyond that mystery. Ashes of the Nether concerns historical legitimacy in the Piglin council, The Lost Village examines settlements that exist only through shared expectation, and Echoes of the End explores memories generated outside the End's surviving archives.[5]

Future[edit | edit source]

Minecraft: World Unmade is intended to conclude the announced Chapter Two storyline on July 18, 2040. Mob Studios has not announced whether the Minecraft Universe will continue with a third chapter.[52]

Brow said the expanded schedule gives individual projects more room to establish their societies and conflicts before the chapter finale. Following the release of Stronghold Protocol, he said a direct third Agent Derp film was not in active development, although Derp, Cipher, Flint, Needle, and the generated operatives could return elsewhere in the chapter. Herobrine is expected to return in Ocean Monument, Minecraft: Echoes of the End, and Minecraft: World Unmade, with Mercer saying later appearances will concern what he chooses to become after no longer being defined by contradictory records.[77][78][79]
