The 2027 IDF World Darts Championship is a professional darts tournament organised by the International Darts Federation (IDF), being held from 12 December 2026 to 3 January 2027 at Alexandra Palace in London, England.

Logan White is the defending champion, having defeated Max Mad 7–6 in the 2026 final.

The tournament features 96 players, reduced from the 128-player field used in 2026. The top 32 players on the IDF Order of Merit were seeded and entered in the second round, while the remaining 64 players contested the first round for the right to join them in the 64-player main bracket.

Mad recorded the first nine-dart finish of the tournament during his second-round victory over Kieran Walsh. Leon Price holds the highest checkout with a maximum 170 finish against Nathan Owens.

Background

Format

The 2027 championship features 96 players, a reduction from the 128-player field used at the 2026 tournament.

The top 32 players on the IDF Order of Merit following the 2026 IDF Players Championship Finals were seeded and received a bye through the first round.

The remaining 64 players contested 32 first-round matches. Each first-round match was tied to a predetermined position in the second-round bracket, with the winner progressing directly to face one of the 32 seeds.

From the second round onwards, the championship operates as a conventional 64-player knockout tournament.

All matches are played using set play. Every set is contested over the best of five legs, with the first player to win three legs winning the set.

There is no extended tie-break within a set. If a set reaches two legs apiece, the fifth leg decides the set.

The match lengths are:

  • First round: best of 5 sets – first to 3
  • Second round: best of 5 sets – first to 3
  • Third round: best of 7 sets – first to 4
  • Fourth round: best of 7 sets – first to 4
  • Quarter-finals: best of 9 sets – first to 5
  • Semi-finals: best of 11 sets – first to 6
  • Final: best of 15 sets – first to 8

The 2027 final has therefore been extended to a possible 15 sets, compared with the best-of-13-set final used in 2026.

The player throwing first in the opening set is determined by the pre-match bull, with the right to throw first alternating at the beginning of each subsequent set.

Third round

The third round began on the afternoon of 20 December with defending champion White facing 32nd seed McKenna. McKenna opened confidently and remained with White throughout the first set, but White took it 3–1 after finishing 116. McKenna responded by winning the second set 3–2, producing a 13-darter in its deciding leg to level the match. White then produced one of the strongest spells of the championship, sweeping the third set 3–0 with legs of 11, 12 and 13 darts and taking the fourth 3–1 after checking out 167 in the second leg.

McKenna held the opening leg of the fifth set in 14 darts, but White responded with consecutive 12-darters before completing the match with a 13-dart break. White won 4–1 with a 111.12 average, surpassing Brow's 110.64 as the highest single-match average of the tournament. He hit 13 maximums and averaged above 115 during the final three sets. McKenna averaged 105.36 in defeat. White advanced to the fourth round for the second consecutive year.

The second match reunited Thomas and Smit, with Smit having already defeated Thomas at the Players Championship Finals before eliminating Hofer at the same tournament and again defeating Hofer at Alexandra Palace. Thomas started strongly, winning the opening set 3–1 and the second 3–2 to move 2–0 ahead. Smit responded with a 3–0 third set and took the fourth 3–2 after Thomas missed a dart at double 16 for a 144 checkout. Thomas regained the lead by winning the fifth set 3–1, moving one set from the fourth round.

Smit refused to fall away. He took the sixth set 3–2, surviving two match darts from Thomas at double 18 before finishing 104 to force a deciding seventh set. Thomas held the opening leg of the decider in 12 darts before Smit levelled with an 11-darter. Smit then broke with a 13-dart leg, but Thomas responded with a 12-darter to make it 2–2. In the final leg, Thomas opened with 180 and Smit replied with 140 before both followed with scores of 140. Thomas left 87 after 12 darts while Smit reached 81. Thomas hit treble 17 but missed double 18 for the match. Smit returned and finished 81 in two darts through treble 19 and double 12 to win 4–3.

Smit averaged 108.44 to Thomas's 108.02 and survived three match darts across the final two sets. The result was Smit's second victory over Thomas in less than a month and continued his run as one of the breakout performers of the championship. His victory set up a fourth-round meeting with White.

Eighth seed Walker then faced Park, who had become the first South Korean player to reach the last 32 of an IDF World Championship. Walker took the opening set 3–1 before Park levelled with a 3–2 second set, finishing 120 in its deciding leg. Walker responded by taking the third set 3–0 and moved 3–1 ahead after edging the fourth 3–2 despite Park producing a 121 checkout.

Park kept the match alive by winning the fifth set 3–1, including a 12-darter, but Walker regained control in the sixth. He opened with a 13-darter, broke throw in 12 and, after Park won the third leg, completed a 104 checkout to seal a 4–2 victory. Walker averaged 108.17 to Park's 105.86 and hit 12 maximums. Park departed after averaging above 104 in each of his two matches from the second round onwards.

The afternoon session concluded with Van Dijk facing Müller. Müller took the opening set 3–2 after Van Dijk missed two set darts, but the ninth seed responded emphatically. Van Dijk won the second 3–0 and the third 3–1, before producing legs of 12, 11 and 13 darts in another 3–0 set to establish a 3–1 lead.

Müller led 2–1 in the fifth set and appeared likely to extend the match, but Van Dijk levelled with a 12-darter and then finished 132 through the bullseye, treble 14 and double 20 to complete a 4–1 victory. Van Dijk averaged 109.37 to Müller's 104.63, hit 14 maximums and reached the fourth round having dropped only one set across his first two matches. His victory confirmed a fourth-round meeting with Walker.

The evening session opened with fourth seed Reeves against Nolan. Nolan took the first set 3–2 after Reeves missed a dart at double 16, but Reeves responded by sweeping the second 3–0 and taking the third 3–1. Nolan levelled the match by winning the fourth set 3–2, finishing 121 on the bullseye in its deciding leg.

Reeves then took control. He won the fifth set 3–0, including an 11-darter, before moving 2–0 ahead in the sixth. Nolan reduced the deficit with a 14-darter but Reeves closed the match with a 12-dart leg, winning 4–2. Reeves averaged 108.72 to Nolan's 104.95 and hit 13 maximums. Nolan's run ended after he had previously eliminated Weber in the second round.

Owens and Michael Reeves then produced the third deciding-set match of the round. Owens won the opening set 3–1 before Reeves levelled with a 3–2 second set. Owens took the third 3–0, only for Reeves to respond with a 3–1 fourth and then move ahead for the first time by winning the fifth set 3–2 with a 116 checkout.

Facing elimination, Owens produced a 3–0 sixth set with legs of 13, 12 and 14 darts to force a seventh. Reeves held the opening leg of the deciding set and Owens levelled in 13. Owens broke in 12 darts to lead 2–1, but Reeves responded with a 14-dart break to force the final leg. Reeves opened with 140, while Owens responded with 180 and followed with another 140. Reeves reached 96 after 12 darts but Owens was first to a finish on 81. Owens missed double 12 for the match, but Reeves could not finish 96, leaving 40. Owens returned to take double six and complete a 4–3 victory.

Owens averaged 107.46 to Reeves's 106.91 and reached the fourth round after a second consecutive deciding-set victory. He will face Parker Reeves for a place in the quarter-finals.

The most highly anticipated match of the evening saw Sanders face Griffiths. Sanders had averaged 109.21 in his opening match, while Griffiths had averaged 104.38 and 106.83 in his first two victories. Griffiths took the opening set 3–2 before Sanders levelled with a 3–1 second. Sanders moved 2–1 ahead after taking the third in a deciding leg, but Griffiths responded with a 3–0 fourth set that included legs of 12 and 11 darts.

Sanders regained the lead by taking the fifth 3–1, only for Griffiths to force a deciding set with a 3–2 sixth. Griffiths opened the seventh with a 12-darter and Sanders replied with an 11-dart leg. Griffiths held in 13 darts to move one leg from victory, but Sanders responded with a 12-dart break to force the deciding leg.

Both players opened the final leg with 180s. Sanders followed with 140, Griffiths with 137, before Sanders added another 180 to leave 41 after nine darts. Griffiths responded with 140 to leave 44 after nine. Sanders missed double 16 for an 11-darter but returned after Griffiths missed double 16 for 44, taking double eight to complete a 4–3 victory. Sanders averaged 110.02 to Griffiths's 108.76, with the pair combining for 29 maximums. Griffiths's 108.76 became the highest losing average of the championship.

The final match of the evening saw Morgan face 21st seed Ethan Mitchell. Morgan won the opening set 3–1 before Mitchell responded with a 3–0 second set. Morgan took the third 3–2, but Mitchell levelled again after winning the fourth 3–1. Morgan moved 3–2 ahead in sets by edging the fifth in a deciding leg and came within one set of the fourth round.

Mitchell responded with one of his strongest sets of the tournament, winning the sixth 3–0 with legs of 12, 13 and 11 darts. Morgan held the opening leg of the deciding set in 14 darts before Mitchell levelled with a 12-darter. Morgan then finished 124 to move one leg from victory, but Mitchell produced a 13-dart break to make it 2–2. In the deciding leg Morgan opened with 140 and Mitchell replied with 180. Mitchell reached 81 after 12 darts while Morgan left 76. Mitchell finished 81 in two darts through treble 19 and double 12 to complete a 4–3 victory.

Mitchell averaged 107.58 to Morgan's 107.12 and became the first seeded player eliminated in the third round. He advanced to face Sanders in the fourth round.

Defending champion

White has won both of his matches without being seriously threatened, defeating Sutton 3–0 in the second round before beating McKenna 4–1 in the third round.

White averaged 111.12 against McKenna, the highest match average of the championship through Sessions 13 and 14. He also recorded a 167 checkout, the second-highest finish of the tournament.

White will face Smit in the fourth round. Smit has eliminated Hofer and Thomas in consecutive rounds, averaging 106.71 and 108.44 respectively.

Notable performances

White's 111.12 against McKenna is the highest single-match average of the championship, overtaking Brow's 110.64.

Sanders averaged 110.02 in his 4–3 victory over Griffiths. Griffiths averaged 108.76 in defeat, the highest losing average of the championship.

Van Dijk has dropped only one set in two matches, averaging 108.92 and 109.37. He will face Walker in the fourth round.

Smit continued his breakout run by recovering from two sets down against Thomas and surviving three match darts to win 4–3. He has now defeated Thomas twice and Hofer twice across the Players Championship Finals and World Championship.

Ethan Mitchell eliminated 12th seed Morgan 4–3 to become the first seeded player eliminated during the third round.

Parker Reeves and Owens will meet in the fourth round after both survived strong third-round challenges, while Sanders will face Mitchell.

Mad remains the only player to record a nine-dart finish. Price's 170 remains the highest checkout.
