Agent Derp is an upcoming American computer-animated spy comedy adventure film based on the Minecraft video game developed by Mojang Studios. Produced by Mob Studios, Mob Productions, and Mojang Studios, it is intended to be an installment of the Minecraft Universe (MIU). The film is directed by Jackson Gold from a screenplay by Freddie Goodwin and a story developed by Gold, Goodwin, and Alex Brow.

The film follows an accident-prone resident of the Overworld who is mistakenly identified as a trained operative after intercepting a message intended for an underground intelligence organization. It shares its title with Agent Derp (2021), an installment of the previous Minecraft Cinematic Universe (MCCU), but features a new interpretation of Derp without retaining the earlier film's continuity or character history.

Mob Studios confirmed that the project had entered active development on October 27, 2026. The film is not part of "Chapter One: The Broken Seed" and is being developed as a largely standalone story within the MIU. No voice cast, production schedule, release year, or release date has been announced.

Development

Reports that Mob Studios was developing a new film titled Agent Derp emerged in August 2026, shortly after the studio announced the first projects in the Minecraft Universe. The project was initially described as exploratory and had not received a director, writer, cast, release window, or confirmed position within the franchise.

The title had previously been used for the 2021 film Agent Derp, which starred Scott Menville as Derp and formed part of the Minecraft Cinematic Universe. That continuity was discontinued following the release of World of X – Part One (2025) and the cancellation of its planned sequel, World of X – Part Two. The Minecraft Universe was subsequently established as a complete reboot that did not retain the MCCU's cast, character histories, visual designs, or mythology.

On October 27, 2026, Mob Studios officially confirmed that Agent Derp had moved into active development. Jackson Gold was announced as director and producer, with Freddie Goodwin writing the screenplay from a story developed with Gold and Alex Brow. Brow, Lena Cross, and Gold serve as producers.

Mob Studios described the film as an animated spy comedy and adventure. The story follows a seemingly ordinary and accident-prone Overworld resident who intercepts a message intended for an underground intelligence organization and is subsequently mistaken for one of its operatives. The studio did not reveal the organization's name, the identity of the film's antagonist, its primary setting, or whether established MIU characters would appear.

Gold said the film would use Derp's mistakes as the basis of its comedy without portraying the character as entirely incompetent. The filmmakers intend for him to become more capable as the story progresses, though his successes may continue to result from unconventional decisions and misunderstandings.

The project is being developed outside "Chapter One: The Broken Seed", the storyline containing Minecraft: The First Night, Netherbound, The Ender Crown, and Minecraft: The Broken Seed. Brow described Agent Derp as a largely standalone story that could occur alongside the chapter without contributing directly to its central conflict.

As of October 2026, the film remained in active development. Mob Studios had not announced when production or principal animation would begin.

Writing

Goodwin is writing the screenplay while continuing his involvement in other Minecraft Universe projects. He developed the film's story with Gold and Brow. The filmmakers selected the spy genre to distinguish the project from the survival and dimensional fantasy stories being developed for "The Broken Seed".

The new Derp is not connected to the version portrayed in the Minecraft Cinematic Universe. He does not share the earlier character's history, relationships, or association with Steve Stonecutter. Mob Studios said the reboot would retain the character's comedic qualities while presenting him as more capable than his reputation initially suggests.

The film's intelligence organization was conceived as an underground network operating throughout the Overworld. Further details about its members, purpose, and relationship with other settlements have not been disclosed. The studio has also not confirmed whether the organization will appear in later MIU projects.

Casting

Casting for the title role began before the film entered active development. Mob Studios has not announced which performers are being considered to voice Derp.

Scott Menville, who portrayed Derp in the previous Minecraft Cinematic Universe, is not expected to return. The studio intends to cast a new performer as part of its complete reinterpretation of the character.
