World of X – Part One is a 2025 American computer-animated fantasy action film based on characters and concepts from the animated works of Squared Media. Produced by Mob Productions and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the sixth film in the Minecraft Cinematic Universe (MCCU), following Minecraft (2016), Block Wars (2019), Agent Derp (2021), Nether Wars, and Nightingale. It is also the first installment of the two-part World of X crossover event. The film was directed by Jackson Miller from a screenplay by Ehren Kruger and Freddie Goodwin, based on a story by Miller and Alex Brow. It features an ensemble voice cast including Jack Black, Amy Poehler, Scott Menville, Max Huang, James Earl Jones, Matt Doherty, Keith David, Gwendoline Christie, Steven Yeun, Karen Fukuhara, Clancy Brown, and Hailee Steinfeld.

The film brings together Steve and Alex Stonecutter, Derp, Jackstar, Jerry, Entity 303, and other characters introduced throughout the Minecraft Cinematic Universe as Herobrine returns with a plan to combine several dimensions into a single unstable reality known as World X. Development began in 2019 when Mob Productions announced that it was developing several interconnected films based on Minecraft and the animated content produced by Squared Media. A standalone film centered on Herobrine entered development in 2020, with early versions of the story focusing on the formation of the Legion of Herobrine. After Miller joined the project, its scale was expanded into a franchise crossover involving characters and unresolved storylines from the previous five films. Kruger was hired to rewrite the screenplay before Goodwin joined the project, and the story was divided into two films after the completed draft was considered too large for a single release. Production took place from 2022 to 2025, with additional voice recording and extensive revisions to the film's final act continuing during post-production.

World of X – Part One premiered in Los Angeles on June 2, 2025, and was released in the United States on June 9. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, with praise for its animation, action sequences, voice performances, emotional weight, and expansion of the MCCU's mythology. Its 168-minute runtime, extensive exposition, and cliffhanger ending received criticism. It grossed $1.136 billion worldwide against a production budget of $230 million, becoming the highest-grossing film in the Minecraft Cinematic Universe and one of the highest-grossing films of 2025. A sequel, World of X – Part Two, is scheduled to be released in November 2026.

Plot[edit | edit source]

Several years after the defeat of the Nightingale, Steve and Alex Stonecutter have withdrawn from active adventuring and established a settlement near the restored Stonecutter Valley. Derp has become an official agent responsible for investigating supernatural disturbances throughout the Overworld, while Jackstar protects the remaining gateways between the Overworld and the Nether. Jerry continues researching the ancient portals uncovered during the previous conflicts, and Entity 303 has disappeared after helping prevent the destruction of the Overworld.

Derp investigates the sudden disappearance of several villages, each of which vanishes without leaving ruins, debris, or survivors. At every location, he discovers a black symbol carved into the ground and a fragment of obsidian that does not originate from the Overworld. Steve initially refuses to become involved, believing the disappearances to be isolated magical events, but Alex convinces him to help when the same symbol appears outside their home. Jerry identifies it as an ancient representation of the Nexus, an artifact believed to have existed before the creation of the Overworld, Nether, and End.

A dimensional fracture opens above Stonecutter Valley, releasing a heavily armored warrior named General Veyra and several creatures made from fragments of different worlds. Veyra explains that she comes from Caldera, a kingdom that was consumed by an artificial dimension called World X. World X was created from the remains of destroyed realities and is controlled by Herobrine, who has returned after secretly rebuilding his power between dimensions. Herobrine intends to use the Nexus to merge every accessible world into World X, allowing him to rewrite their histories and rule a single unified reality.

Herobrine assembles the Legion of Herobrine under the command of Malachar, a warrior who believes the separation of the dimensions is responsible for their constant wars. The Legion attacks settlements throughout the Overworld and retrieves several Nexus fragments that were hidden following the creation of the Minecraft universe. Malachar is assisted by Nyxara, an assassin capable of traveling through shadows, and an army of corrupted creatures drawn from the Nether, End, and destroyed worlds.

Steve, Alex, Derp, Jackstar, Jerry, and Veyra travel to the ruins of an ancient portal sanctuary, where they meet Kairo, a young keeper who can sense openings between dimensions. Kairo reveals that the Nexus was divided into five fragments after its creators discovered that combining them could collapse the boundaries between worlds. Herobrine has already recovered three fragments. One of the remaining pieces is hidden beneath the Deep Dark and protected by the Warden King, while the final fragment was taken by Entity 303 before his disappearance.

The group travels underground and enters the Warden King's civilization. The Warden King refuses to surrender the fragment, believing that the surface worlds will inevitably destroy themselves. Before Steve can convince him otherwise, the Legion invades the kingdom. Jackstar and Veyra lead its soldiers against Malachar, while Alex and Derp attempt to evacuate the civilians. Herobrine enters the battle and defeats the Warden King, taking the fourth fragment before collapsing the underground city.

Entity 303 rescues Steve and Jerry from the destruction. He explains that he has been hiding inside abandoned sections of the world's code to prevent Herobrine from locating the final Nexus fragment. Entity 303 claims that Herobrine cannot activate the completed Nexus without his energy, as both entities were created from the same corrupted force. Steve distrusts him because of his previous attempts to destroy the Overworld, but Alex argues that they cannot defeat Herobrine without his knowledge.

The surviving heroes retreat to the Order's fortress, where Entity 303 reveals that World X is already expanding. The missing villages and kingdoms were not destroyed but transported into the new dimension, where their inhabitants are being forced to construct a fortress around the Nexus. Herobrine intends to use the population of each captured world to power the final merger. Veyra proposes entering World X and destroying the fortress before the fifth fragment can be taken.

Nyxara infiltrates the Order's fortress and captures Kairo. While returning him to Herobrine, she discovers that the Legion's members will also be erased when the merger is complete. Herobrine intends to create new versions of his followers who have no memories, independence, or ability to challenge him. Nyxara releases Kairo and helps him escape, but Malachar discovers her betrayal. She is gravely injured before Veyra intervenes and brings her back to the group.

Using Kairo's abilities and Entity 303's fragment, the heroes open a portal into World X. They find a distorted landscape made from sections of the Overworld, Nether, End, Caldera, and other destroyed dimensions. Steve and Alex locate the captured civilians, while Derp, Jerry, and Kairo enter the Nexus chamber. Jackstar and Veyra confront Malachar, and Entity 303 searches for Herobrine.

Malachar defeats Jackstar and admits that he knows Herobrine intends to erase the Legion. He nevertheless believes that a single world without conflict is worth his own destruction. Veyra kills Malachar after he refuses to surrender, while Jackstar destroys the machines controlling the captured civilians. Alex organizes their evacuation as World X begins collapsing around them.

Entity 303 confronts Herobrine inside the Nexus chamber but is overwhelmed. Herobrine reveals that Entity 303 was unknowingly created as a living container for the final Nexus fragment and forcibly removes it from him. With all five fragments assembled, Herobrine activates the Nexus. The barriers separating the dimensions begin to disintegrate, causing parts of the Nether, End, and other worlds to appear throughout the Overworld.

Jerry discovers that the Nexus can be interrupted by destroying its central stabilizer, but doing so while the merger is underway could permanently trap anyone remaining inside World X. Steve orders the others to escape while he stays behind to reach the stabilizer. Alex refuses to abandon him, but Steve closes the portal after promising that he will find another way home.

Steve reaches the stabilizer and damages it, temporarily halting the merger. Herobrine attacks him, but Entity 303 absorbs energy from the Nexus and forces Herobrine away. The resulting explosion destroys the fortress and apparently disintegrates Entity 303. Steve survives but is stranded inside World X as the portal closes.

In the Overworld, Alex, Derp, Jackstar, Jerry, Veyra, Kairo, and Nyxara watch as the sky fractures into several layers. Although the complete merger was interrupted, large sections of the dimensions have been permanently combined. Alex realizes that Steve and millions of displaced people remain trapped inside World X. Herobrine emerges among the ruins of his fortress and declares that the heroes have only delayed the creation of his new world.

In a mid-credits scene, Steve awakens in a ruined version of Stonecutter Valley and discovers a group of survivors from the missing settlements. A mysterious figure tells him that World X has existed far longer than Herobrine claims. In a post-credits scene, a flickering fragment of Entity 303 appears within the Nexus and begins transmitting a message to Jerry.

Cast[edit | edit source]

  • Jack Black as Steve Stonecutter, a veteran adventurer and builder who helped protect the Overworld during each of the previous films. Steve has withdrawn from active combat at the beginning of the film and struggles with the consequences of repeatedly placing his family and friends in danger. Black described Steve's story as being centered on his fear that the Overworld will never remain safe while he is part of it.
  • Amy Poehler as Alex Stonecutter, Steve's wife and an experienced explorer, strategist, and fighter. Alex becomes one of the leaders of the alliance against Herobrine and refuses to allow Steve to carry the responsibility for protecting the Overworld alone.
  • Scott Menville as Derp, an unpredictable but capable agent assigned to investigate unusual threats across the Overworld. The film continues Derp's development from Agent Derp, portraying him as more experienced while retaining his impulsive personality and comedic behavior.
  • Max Huang as Jackstar, a powerful warrior and longtime ally of Steve, Alex, and Derp. Jackstar has spent the years preceding the film guarding the portals between the Overworld and the Nether and initially distrusts Veyra and Nyxara.
  • An uncredited performer as Jerry, a member of Steve's group who specializes in ancient portals, artifacts, and forgotten civilizations. The identity of Jerry's voice actor continued to be omitted from the film's credits as a recurring joke carried over from the previous installments.
  • James Earl Jones as Herobrine, an ancient supernatural entity and the creator of World X. Herobrine returns after rebuilding his power between dimensions and seeks to combine every world into a single reality under his control.
  • Matt Doherty as Entity 303, a digital entity with reality-altering abilities and a former enemy of Steve and his allies. Entity 303 possesses the final fragment of the Nexus and reluctantly joins the heroes after discovering that Herobrine intends to absorb him.
  • Keith David as Malachar, the commander of the Legion of Herobrine and Herobrine's most devoted follower. Malachar believes that the separation of the dimensions is responsible for the wars between them and accepts that he will be destroyed by the merger.
  • Gwendoline Christie as General Veyra, the former military commander of Caldera, a kingdom consumed by World X. Veyra initially blames the residents of the Overworld for failing to prevent Herobrine's return but joins Steve's group to rescue her people.
  • Steven Yeun as Kairo, a young portal keeper who can sense dimensional openings and determine where they lead. Kairo helps the group enter World X and becomes a target of the Legion because of his connection to the Nexus.
  • Karen Fukuhara as Nyxara, a shadow-traveling assassin and former member of the Legion of Herobrine. Nyxara defects after learning that Herobrine intends to erase his followers once the worlds have merged.
  • Clancy Brown as the Warden King, the ruler of an ancient civilization beneath the Deep Dark and the protector of one of the Nexus fragments. The Warden King distrusts the surface worlds and initially refuses to assist Steve.
  • Hailee Steinfeld as Evelyn Vale, an archer and resistance leader from one of the kingdoms transported into World X. Evelyn helps Steve organize the surviving prisoners after he becomes trapped inside the dimension.

Characters and performers from earlier Minecraft Cinematic Universe films also make brief appearances during the dimensional merger and the evacuation of the Overworld. Several of these appearances were concealed before the film's release and were not included in its trailers or promotional cast listings.

Production[edit | edit source]

Development[edit | edit source]

In July 2019, Mob Productions announced that it was developing multiple interconnected films based on Minecraft and the animated content produced by Squared Media. The announcement followed the release of Block Wars, which expanded the mythology surrounding Herobrine and Entity 303 and established several storylines intended to continue in later installments. One of the projects entering development was described as a darker film centered on Herobrine, who had appeared as a recurring antagonist throughout the franchise.

By early 2020, the project was being developed under the working title Herobrine. Alex Brow and producer Jason Dale created an initial story in which Herobrine assembled a group of villains called the Legion of Herobrine to conquer the Overworld. The original treatment was considerably smaller than the finished film and primarily followed Herobrine, Steve, Alex, and Entity 303. Several concepts developed for this version, including Malachar, the Legion, and the Nexus, were retained following the project's redevelopment.

Development continued while Agent Derp, Nether Wars, and Nightingale were being produced. Following the release of Agent Derp in 2021, Mob Productions began considering the Herobrine film as a crossover that could bring together the main characters of the franchise. The studio wanted the project to serve as the culmination of the storylines established in the first five films while introducing a larger conflict for future installments.

Jackson Miller entered negotiations to direct in August 2021 and was confirmed later that year. Miller considered the existing screenplay too similar to the earlier films and proposed a story involving the destruction and combination of multiple dimensions. The title World of X originated from Miller's designation for an unknown artificial reality assembled from the remains of other worlds. Miller and Brow developed the revised story throughout 2022.

Ehren Kruger was hired to write a new screenplay, with Freddie Goodwin later joining as co-writer. Their draft incorporated Steve and Alex Stonecutter, Derp, Jackstar, Jerry, Herobrine, and Entity 303, alongside several new characters created for the film. Miller wanted the recurring characters to have significant roles rather than appearing only during the final battle, describing the film as a continuation of each character's individual story.

The first completed draft was more than 300 pages and included the entire conflict with Herobrine, the creation of World X, and its eventual resolution. Mob Productions initially considered producing a single film with an extended runtime but determined that the amount of material would require major characters and storylines to be removed. In September 2022, the studio approved Miller's proposal to divide the film into two parts.

The project was officially announced as World of X – Part One during a Mob Productions presentation in December 2022. The studio also confirmed that World of X – Part Two was in development and would complete the story. Miller said the two films were designed as separate chapters rather than a single film divided at an arbitrary point, with Part One focusing on the creation of World X and the sequel dealing with the war inside the merged reality.

The film was produced on a budget of $230 million, making it the most expensive Minecraft Cinematic Universe film at the time. Brow, Dale, and Miller served as producers. The increased budget was attributed to the number of characters, environments, action sequences, and animation teams required to depict the merging dimensions.

Writing[edit | edit source]

Kruger and Goodwin structured the film around Steve's decision to return to active adventuring after attempting to build a peaceful life with Alex. Miller wanted Steve's conflict to differ from his previous stories, explaining that the character was no longer afraid of being unable to defeat an enemy but feared that his involvement repeatedly endangered the people around him. Alex was written as the more determined of the two and challenges Steve's belief that he must protect everyone alone.

Derp's role was designed to continue his development from Agent Derp. Although the character remains a primary source of comedy, the writers portrayed him as a competent investigator whose discoveries initiate the main story. Jackstar was given a more serious role as the defender of the dimensional gateways, while Jerry's knowledge of portals became essential to understanding the Nexus.

Entity 303 was written as an uncertain ally whose previous actions prevented the other characters from fully trusting him. Miller said the relationship between Entity 303 and Herobrine formed the foundation of the film's mythology. The two entities were revealed to originate from the same corrupted energy, explaining why Herobrine requires Entity 303 to complete the Nexus.

Herobrine's motivation was expanded beyond conquering the Overworld. The writers portrayed him as believing that separate dimensions inevitably create division, war, and destruction. His plan to merge them into World X would eliminate those conflicts but also erase the identities, histories, and freedom of their inhabitants. Miller described Herobrine as a character who recognizes genuine problems within the universe but uses them to justify complete control.

Veyra, Kairo, Nyxara, Malachar, the Warden King, and Evelyn Vale were created specifically for the two-part story. Veyra was designed to provide the perspective of someone whose home had already been consumed by World X, while Nyxara and Malachar represented opposing reactions to learning the truth about Herobrine's plan. Evelyn's role was intentionally limited in Part One because the character was planned to become more prominent in the sequel.

The ending was revised several times during production. Earlier drafts concluded with Steve and Entity 303 both escaping World X, but Miller believed the film required a significant consequence that could not be immediately reversed. Steve was therefore left trapped inside the dimension, while Entity 303's fate was left ambiguous. The mid-credits and post-credits scenes were added to establish the opening storylines of Part Two.

Casting[edit | edit source]

Jack Black, Amy Poehler, Scott Menville, Max Huang, James Earl Jones, and Matt Doherty reprised their roles from the previous Minecraft Cinematic Universe films. The recurring cast had appeared together in Minecraft, Block Wars, Agent Derp, Nether Wars, and Nightingale. Jerry also returned, although the character's performer was again not identified in the credits or promotional materials.

Black and Poehler began recording their dialogue in late 2022. Miller said their scenes were recorded together whenever possible to preserve the relationship established between Steve and Alex in the previous films. Black described Steve as more emotionally exhausted than in the earlier installments, while Poehler said Alex had become less willing to accept Steve's attempts to distance himself from danger.

Menville recorded additional material during post-production after several of Derp's scenes were expanded. The filmmakers wanted the character's humor to provide relief without undermining the destruction shown throughout the film. Huang underwent motion-capture training for Jackstar's action sequences, with his physical performance used as a reference for the animation.

Jones returned as Herobrine, recording most of his dialogue during the initial voice sessions. Miller wanted Herobrine's voice to remain controlled and authoritative rather than becoming louder during the character's confrontations. Doherty also returned as Entity 303 and performed both the character's dialogue and distorted vocal effects used when his powers become unstable.

Keith David, Gwendoline Christie, Steven Yeun, Karen Fukuhara, Clancy Brown, and Hailee Steinfeld were cast as original characters created for the film. David's casting as Malachar was announced in March 2023, followed by Christie as General Veyra and Yeun as Kairo. Fukuhara and Brown were announced later that year, while Steinfeld's involvement was concealed until shortly before the film's release because Evelyn primarily appears near the end of the story.

Animation and design[edit | edit source]

Animation began during pre-production in 2022 and continued until early 2025. Mob Productions divided the film among several internal teams, with separate groups responsible for the Overworld, Nether, End, Deep Dark, Caldera, and World X. Miller wanted every dimension to retain the block-based visual identity associated with Minecraft while having distinctive lighting, movement, architecture, and environmental behavior.

The Overworld was designed with warmer lighting and broader natural environments to emphasize the life Steve and Alex had built after the earlier films. The Nether used harsher contrasts, volcanic effects, and unstable structures, while the Deep Dark sequences relied on limited visibility and environmental sound. Caldera was shown primarily through Veyra's memories and combined stone cities with large mechanical gateways.

World X required the largest amount of development. The dimension was constructed from fragments of every location consumed by Herobrine, allowing buildings, landscapes, weather systems, and gravity to change within individual scenes. The filmmakers avoided making World X completely chaotic, instead giving it a deliberate structure that reflected Herobrine's attempt to create a controlled reality.

Herobrine's design was updated from the previous films. His recognizable appearance and glowing white eyes were retained, but his body gradually developed cracks containing the energy of the Nexus. Entity 303's animation was also modified, with sections of the character flickering or disappearing as Herobrine approached completion of the artifact.

The film contains more than 2,500 effects shots. Its largest sequence, depicting the partial merger of the Overworld, Nether, End, and World X, required nearly two years to complete. Each environment was animated separately before being combined into a single continuously changing landscape.

Post-production[edit | edit source]

Jordan Hayes and Michael P. Shawver edited the film. Miller's initial assembly ran for approximately four hours, including several extended sequences involving the captured settlements and the history of the Nexus. The first completed cut had a runtime of three hours and 24 minutes before being reduced to 168 minutes.

Several supporting scenes were removed to improve the pacing of the first act. These included a longer introduction to Steve and Alex's settlement, an additional mission involving Derp, and flashbacks showing the destruction of Caldera. Miller said the removed material did not substantially alter the main story and that some concepts could be reused in Part Two.

Additional voice recording took place throughout 2024. The final confrontation between Entity 303 and Herobrine was expanded, and new dialogue was added to clarify the relationship between the characters and the origin of the final Nexus fragment. The post-credits scene was completed in January 2025.

The film was completed in March 2025. Post-production overlapped with the writing and early production of World of X – Part Two, allowing the filmmakers to include visual details and dialogue intended to become more significant in the sequel.

Music[edit | edit source]

Weston Doyle composed the film's musical score, returning from previous Minecraft Cinematic Universe installments. Doyle used themes associated with Steve, Alex, Derp, Jackstar, Herobrine, and Entity 303 while creating new motifs for World X, the Nexus, and the Legion of Herobrine.

The score combined a large orchestra, electronic music, distorted choral vocals, percussion, and sounds derived from musical effects used in Minecraft. Herobrine's theme was built around a slower and more distorted version of a melody introduced in Minecraft, while Entity 303's theme used interrupted electronic patterns that gradually merge with Herobrine's music during their confrontation.

The soundtrack album was released digitally on June 6, 2025. A physical edition containing additional music and alternate versions of several themes was released following the film's theatrical run.

Marketing[edit | edit source]

Mob Productions formally announced World of X – Part One in December 2022 with a title reveal showing the Overworld being divided by a large black fracture. The presentation confirmed Miller as director, Kruger and Goodwin as screenwriters, and the return of the principal cast. The studio described the film as the beginning of the largest story in the Minecraft Cinematic Universe.

The first footage was shown privately to theater owners in April 2024. A teaser trailer was released publicly in October and focused on the disappearance of settlements, Steve's return, and the first appearance of World X. Herobrine was heard but not fully shown, while the final shot featured Entity 303 emerging from a corrupted portal.

A full trailer was released in February 2025. It revealed Herobrine's return, the Legion, General Veyra, Kairo, and the dimensional merger. The trailer received substantial online attention and recorded the largest first-day viewership for an MCCU trailer at the time. A second trailer released in April focused on the relationship between Steve and Alex and showed additional footage of the Deep Dark battle.

The final trailer was released in May 2025 and included the first clear footage of Herobrine inside World X. The studio continued to conceal the extent of Evelyn Vale's role, Entity 303's involvement in the climax, and Steve's fate.

Disney and Mob Productions supported the film with television advertisements, online promotions, toys, clothing, publishing tie-ins, and collaborations with several video games. A limited-time Minecraft event allowed players to visit locations inspired by World X and obtain character skins based on Steve, Alex, Derp, Jackstar, Veyra, Nyxara, and Herobrine.

The theatrical poster depicts Steve, Alex, Derp, Jackstar, Jerry, and Entity 303 standing before a fractured portal, with the environments of the Overworld, Nether, End, and World X visible behind them. Herobrine appears above the portal holding the partially assembled Nexus.

Release[edit | edit source]

Theatrical[edit | edit source]

World of X – Part One premiered at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles on June 2, 2025. Members of the cast and production team attended, and the screening was followed by a presentation previewing the development of Part Two.

The film was released in several international markets beginning June 6 before its United States release on June 9. It was presented in IMAX, Dolby Cinema, 4DX, and other premium formats.

The film had previously been considered for a late 2024 release but was delayed to allow additional time for animation, effects work, and revisions to the final act. Miller said the delay also prevented the production team from reducing the scale of the dimensional merger sequence.

Home media[edit | edit source]

The film was released for digital download on August 19, 2025, followed by Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD releases on September 9. The physical editions include deleted scenes, production documentaries, concept art, an audio commentary by Miller, Brow, Kruger, and Goodwin, and a feature examining the history of the Minecraft Cinematic Universe.

The deleted scenes include Derp's original introductory mission, an extended confrontation between Jackstar and Malachar, additional footage of the Warden King's civilization, and a longer version of Steve and Alex's final conversation before Steve becomes trapped in World X.

World of X – Part One became available on streaming in October 2025. Miller said that an extended edition was discussed but was not planned because most of the removed material consisted of alternate versions of scenes rather than essential story content.

Reception[edit | edit source]

Box office[edit | edit source]

World of X – Part One grossed $472.8 million in the United States and Canada and $663.2 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $1.136 billion. It became the first Minecraft Cinematic Universe film to gross more than $1 billion, surpassing Nightingale as the franchise's highest-grossing installment. It was also one of the highest-grossing films released in 2025.

In the United States and Canada, the film was projected to earn between $180 million and $210 million from 4,400 theaters during its opening period. It earned $89.7 million on its first day, including $35.1 million from preview screenings, and debuted with $206.4 million. The opening was the largest for a Minecraft Cinematic Universe film and one of the largest openings for an animated film.

The film remained in first place during its second weekend and crossed $500 million worldwide within its first week of release. It reached $1 billion during its fifth weekend. Analysts attributed its performance to the return of the franchise's original cast, the prominence of Herobrine in the marketing, strong audience interest in the crossover story, and repeat viewings ahead of the sequel.

Critical response[edit | edit source]

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 82 percent of 381 critics' reviews were positive, with an average rating of 7.2 out of 10. The website's critical consensus praised the film's scale, animation, voice performances, and emotional stakes while noting that it functioned primarily as the opening half of a larger story. Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 68 out of 100, based on 58 critics, indicating "generally favorable" reviews.

Critics frequently praised the relationship between Steve and Alex, Black and Poehler's performances, and the film's decision to give the returning characters substantial roles within the crossover. Menville's performance as Derp was viewed as an effective source of humor, while Jones and Doherty received praise for the conflict between Herobrine and Entity 303.

The animation and production design received positive attention, particularly the depiction of World X and the partial merger of the dimensions. Reviewers considered the final battle one of the franchise's strongest action sequences and praised the decision to depict the merger as a destructive event rather than a conventional portal-based confrontation.

The film's runtime and extensive mythology divided critics. Some considered the explanations surrounding the Nexus, World X, and the previous films unnecessarily complicated, while others believed the mythology provided greater depth than earlier installments. The cliffhanger ending was also divisive, with criticism directed at the lack of a complete resolution to Herobrine's plan.

Audiences surveyed by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A" on an A+ to F scale, while those surveyed by PostTrak gave it a 91-percent positive score, with 78 percent saying that they would definitely recommend it.

Accolades[edit | edit source]

The film received several nominations for its animation, visual effects, musical score, production design, sound, and voice performances. Its depiction of World X and the dimensional merger was recognized by multiple animation and visual effects organizations.

Sequel[edit | edit source]

World of X – Part Two was confirmed when Mob Productions announced that the original World of X screenplay would be divided into two films. Jackson Miller returned as director, with Ehren Kruger and Freddie Goodwin writing the screenplay from a story developed with Alex Brow.

Jack Black, Amy Poehler, Scott Menville, Max Huang, Matt Doherty, Gwendoline Christie, Steven Yeun, Karen Fukuhara, and Hailee Steinfeld are set to reprise their roles. The sequel continues immediately after the ending of Part One, following Alex and the surviving heroes as they attempt to enter World X, rescue Steve and the displaced civilizations, restore Entity 303, and prevent Herobrine from completing the merger.

Miller described the sequel as a larger war film centered primarily within World X. Evelyn Vale was intended to have an expanded role after being introduced near the end of the first film. Production began while Part One was in post-production, with several connecting sequences filmed in advance to maintain continuity between the installments.

World of X – Part Two is scheduled to be released in November 2026.
