The Mob Unified Franchise (MUF) is an American shared universe and media franchise created and produced by Mob Productions. The MUF encompasses a series of original films and related media, all set within a single, interconnected continuity. The franchise is distinguished by its focus on new, original characters and ambitious worldbuilding, aiming to establish a modern mythology unique to Mob Productions.

Development

On January 14, 2019, Mob Productions publicly announced plans to launch a new cinematic universe independent of any existing intellectual property. The initiative was revealed by company president Freddie Goodwin, who described the project as "a completely original, expansive universe of heroes, villains, and worlds," intended to provide a fresh alternative to established shared-universe franchises.[1] Goodwin stated that the MUF would focus on innovative storytelling, with each film contributing to a larger, evolving narrative. No specific films or characters were revealed at the time of the announcement.

On August 8, 2019, Mob Productions officially announced the titles of the first two films of "Part One" of the Mob Unified Franchise: Duskbreakers and Sentinel Prime. Both are original concepts developed internally by the MUF creative team. No release dates, plot details, or casting information were provided at the time of announcement. According to Goodwin, these films would introduce core characters and themes that would define the foundation of the MUF.[2]

On November 21, 2019, Mob Productions confirmed that Duskbreakers would be released on July 16, 2021, directed by Ava Remington, written by Samuel Trask, and produced by Freddie Goodwin and Marissa Lane. Sentinel Prime was set for release on May 20, 2022, directed by Connor Blake, written by Jenna Wu, and produced by Freddie Goodwin and Travis King.[3]

On February 12, 2020, Goodwin announced a multi-part roadmap for the franchise’s future. Goodwin confirmed that "Part One" would consist of several films, and revealed that "Part Two" and "Part Three" were already in early development. Collectively, these three parts would make up what Mob Productions officially titled Chapter One of the Mob Unified Franchise.[4]

On October 2, 2020, Mob Productions announced the full lineup of films that would make up "Part One" of the Mob Unified Franchise, including their release dates. The studio also revealed the title of the first film in "Part Two," though no release date was provided for it. According to Goodwin, these announcements set the roadmap for the entirety of Chapter One.[5]

Project Rift

Project Rift was officially announced during MobCon 2025 as an experimental addition to the Mob Unified Franchise slate. Jordan Peele is attached as both director and screenwriter, marking his first collaboration with Mob Productions. While plot details are tightly under wraps, Project Rift has been described by Peele as "a boundary-pushing psychological sci-fi thriller" that will introduce "a new level of threat" to the franchise mythos. The film is expected to focus on the fallout from technology that can fracture realities and perception. No cast members have been confirmed.

Children of Tomorrow

Children of Tomorrow is an upcoming installment directed and written by Lulu Wang. The film is set to explore a new generation of enhanced individuals who emerge in the wake of the Eclipse Event’s long-term effects. According to producer Lucia Park, the story will focus on intergenerational conflict, hope, and the ethical challenges faced by young characters coming of age in the Mob Unified Franchise world. Children of Tomorrow is currently in development, with no casting or release details revealed.

Night Engines

Night Engines was announced in early 2026 as a collaboration between acclaimed director Denis Villeneuve and screenwriter Phoebe Waller-Bridge. The project will reportedly blend high-concept science fiction with grounded character drama, and is said to involve an isolated city where a perpetual night has altered the laws of physics and society. Freddie Goodwin and Naoko Fujita are producing. While little else has been made public, Villeneuve has described the film as "a spiritual successor to the franchise’s original ethos of discovery and danger."

Release

Theatrical distribution

From its inception, distribution for the Mob Unified Franchise (MUF) has been handled primarily by Mob Productions itself, marking a rare approach in an era dominated by major studio partnerships. For Duskbreakers (2021), Mob Productions entered into a partnership with Summit Media Group for international markets, while retaining domestic distribution rights. The strategy was intended to maximize control over release schedules, marketing, and brand identity, though it presented challenges in scaling the franchise’s reach for subsequent entries.[6]

For Sentinel Prime (2022) and subsequent films, Mob Productions expanded its global distribution partnership, signing a multi-film deal with Phoenix Pictures to ensure broader theatrical rollout across Europe, Asia, and Latin America. The deal also granted Phoenix limited merchandising rights in non-U.S. territories. This model has remained in place for the rest of Chapter One, with Mob retaining all North American rights and final creative control over all promotional material.[7]

Mob’s direct-distribution strategy has been praised for its creative independence but criticized by some analysts for lacking the logistical muscle of traditional Hollywood distributors, occasionally resulting in staggered release dates and limited screenings in smaller markets. Despite this, the approach has allowed Mob Productions to rapidly pivot its marketing and rollout in response to fan engagement and box office trends.[8]

Home media

Physical media for the Mob Unified Franchise is distributed exclusively by Mob Home Entertainment, with each film receiving a Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K UHD release approximately three months after theatrical debut. The Duskbreakers: Collector’s Edition box set, released in November 2022, featured behind-the-scenes featurettes, director commentary, and a concept art booklet, and was praised for its production value and in-depth supplemental material.[9]

Streaming and television

Mob Productions launched its own streaming service, Mob+ (Mob Plus), in late 2022, granting subscribers exclusive early access to new MUF films after their theatrical window, along with original behind-the-scenes content and companion documentaries. Duskbreakers became available on Mob+ 60 days after its theatrical release, a model adopted for subsequent films.[10]

Prior to Mob+, cable broadcast rights for Duskbreakers and Sentinel Prime were acquired by Network 7, premiering as “event television” in the U.S. six months after digital release. Internationally, selected titles have appeared on various regional streaming platforms, depending on the territory and existing distribution partnerships.

IMAX and special screenings

Each film in the franchise has received an IMAX release, with Mob Productions partnering with IMAX Corporation for special “Franchise Nights”—limited event screenings featuring Q&A sessions with cast and crew, early previews of future films, and audience giveaways. The 2024 “Mob Unified Franchise: Chapter One Marathon” event screened all released films in sequence, drawing large audiences and positive fan response.[11]

Reception

Duskbreakers, the franchise's first release, premiered on July 16, 2021, and received generally positive reviews from critics. Reviewers praised its original worldbuilding, visual style, and the performances of John Boyega and Florence Pugh, while some cited pacing issues in the final act. The film holds an 84% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on over 300 reviews, and a score of 72 out of 100 on Metacritic, indicating "generally favorable reviews."[12][13] At the box office, Duskbreakers earned $68 million in its opening weekend in North America and went on to gross $495 million worldwide against a reported budget of $120 million.[14] Audience response was positive, and the film’s success established the MUF as a viable new cinematic universe.

Industry analysts noted that the success of Duskbreakers positioned the Mob Unified Franchise as a serious contender in the blockbuster space, distinguishing itself with its focus on original characters and narrative ambition. The franchise’s emphasis on diverse casting, grounded science fiction, and character-driven stories has received praise as a fresh alternative to other established cinematic universes.[15]
