Starlash: Dawn of Orion is an upcoming animated science-fantasy adventure film produced by Aurora Animation Studios. Directed by Mara Ellison, the film serves as the first installment in the revived Starlash saga, which previously launched Aurora’s earliest franchise. It features the voices of Hailee Steinfeld and Diego Luna, with music by composer Dane Rivas. The film is scheduled to be released in the United States on June 18, 2027.

Set in a distant star-faring future where celestial energy can be harnessed by trained navigators, Dawn of Orion follows a gifted young pilot who discovers an unprecedented ability to sense and manipulate astral fields. Her emergence draws the attention of a rebellious interstellar movement and a powerful authoritarian fleet seeking to control the cosmic phenomenon known as Orion Pulse.

Plot[edit | edit source]

In a future era of deep-space travel, humanity’s scattered colonies depend on “astral navigation,” a rare sensory discipline allowing pilots to read gravitational currents and star-energy flows. Leah Varas, a 19-year-old cadet with unremarkable test scores, secretly experiences the astral field in a far more vivid, instinctive way than any navigator before her. When a training accident exposes her abilities, she becomes a target for the Celestial Dominion, an expansive military power attempting to weaponize the legendary energy surge known as the Orion Pulse.

Rescued by a renegade pilot named Thalen Kasar, Leah is swept into an underground rebellion that believes she may be able to stabilize or redirect the Pulse. As the Dominion advances toward a total-system lockdown, Leah must undergo accelerated navigator training, decipher cryptic astral signatures, and confront the terrifying possibility that she alone can either renew the galaxy’s balance or destroy it. The film follows her struggle to define her identity as she learns that the Orion Pulse responds not only to physics, but to emotion, memory, and will.

Voice cast[edit | edit source]

  • Hailee Steinfeld as Leah Varas, a cadet with unprecedented astral sensitivity
  • Diego Luna as Thalen Kasar, a veteran rogue navigator and rebellion leader
  • Additional cast members will be announced as production continues.

Development[edit | edit source]

Starlash: Dawn of Orion emerged from early concept work conducted during the post-production phase of Starforged (2024). Aurora Animation Studios confirmed in mid-2025 that the film would launch a “new era” of the Starlash universe, separate from previous continuity. Director Mara Ellison developed the story around the idea of “astral physics as emotional resonance,” focusing on blending space-opera elements with intimate character arcs.

Ellison collaborated with long-time Aurora producers to rebuild the visual identity of the franchise, aiming for a more grounded and tactile aesthetic while maintaining the studio’s signature cosmic imagery. Extensive pre-viz experimentation was conducted to create the film’s astral-field sequences, which incorporate simulated camera motion and stylized gravitational distortion.

Writing[edit | edit source]

Ellison wrote the initial story treatment in late 2025, expanding it into a full screenplay with contributions from studio co-founder Jonah Pike. The writing team emphasized balancing cosmic spectacle with personal stakes, structuring the narrative as an origin story centered on capability, responsibility, and self-definition. According to early interviews, the script incorporates themes drawn from cartography, aviation psychology, and ancient navigation traditions.

Casting[edit | edit source]

Hailee Steinfeld was the first actor to join the project, cast shortly before Aurora’s 2026 slate announcement. Diego Luna joined the voice cast soon after, taking on the role of Thalen Kasar. Additional roles remain undisclosed, and the studio has stated that further casting announcements will follow in 2026.

Animation[edit | edit source]

Aurora’s in-house animation teams began principal visual development in early 2026. The film uses an upgraded version of the studio’s proprietary rendering system, allowing for dynamic star-field illumination and volumetric energy surfaces. Early footage shown in private industry previews featured complex astral-current simulations and wide-angle cosmic vistas inspired by astrophotography.

Music[edit | edit source]

The score is composed by Dane Rivas, whose previous work with Aurora on projects such as Hollow Orbit (2019) garnered critical acclaim for atmospheric blending of electronic and orchestral textures. Rivas has described Dawn of Orion as “a symphony of cosmic tension and quiet human determination,” incorporating experimental astral choral elements and manipulated harmonic drones.

Release[edit | edit source]

The film is set for theatrical release on June 18, 2027, in the United States, with international rollout following through July 2027. Promotional materials are expected to begin publication during the first quarter of 2026, including a teaser trailer planned for release alongside Aurora’s Starforged anniversary re-release.

Future[edit | edit source]

Starlash: Dawn of Orion serves as the first chapter in a planned multi-film saga. A direct sequel, Starlash II, is scheduled for release in late 2030, continuing the storyline begun in Dawn of Orion. Aurora Animation Studios has indicated that the Starlash revival is intended to operate as a long-term flagship franchise for the studio.
