The Zerra Halo is a line of smartphones developed and marketed by Zerra Technologies that run ZerraOS, the company’s proprietary mobile operating system. The first-generation Halo was unveiled by Zerra founder and CEO Aric Veyren on March 14, 2010, at the company’s inaugural Zenith keynote, and launched later that year. Since then, Zerra has released annual iterations of the Halo alongside major updates to ZerraOS; the latest models are the Halo 16, the higher-end Halo 16 Pro and Pro Max, and the ultra-thin Halo Arc. As of July 2025, the Halo line has sold more than 2.4 billion units worldwide, establishing Zerra as one of the dominant forces in the global smartphone industry.

The original Halo was the first smartphone to introduce a seamless edge-to-edge “Eclipse Display” and haptic-layered multi-touch input. Over the years, the Halo has added higher-resolution OLED panels, advanced camera arrays with computational imaging, waterproofing, and a suite of accessibility-focused tools. Early models featured a single capacitive control bar, with the Halo 5 introducing the "Z-Key" biometric sensor. Starting with the Halo X in 2017, Zerra transitioned to a near bezel-less front design, introducing "HaloID" facial recognition and a fully gesture-based navigation system in place of the Z-Key.

The Halo series, powered by ZerraOS, stands as one of the two major smartphone ecosystems worldwide, alongside Android. The first-generation Halo was described by Veyren as “the beginning of a new language for human technology.” The line has been credited with popularizing immersive full-screen hardware design and sparking the rise of the modern “app ecosystem,” now a global economy in itself. In addition to the built-in suite of ZerraOS apps, the Zerra Store offers over 1.8 million applications for download as of August 2024.

History[edit | edit source]

Origins (2010–2024)[edit | edit source]

Development of the Zerra Halo began in the late 2000s under the direction of Zerra founder and CEO Aric Veyren, who envisioned a mobile device that could merge advanced computing power with a seamless touch interface. The first-generation Halo was announced on March 14, 2010, at Zerra’s inaugural Zenith keynote in San Francisco, and released later that year on September 21. The device introduced the company’s proprietary Eclipse Display, a layered multi-touch screen that allowed for haptic feedback and smoother gesture recognition. It also debuted the Z-Port connector, a proprietary data and charging port that became standard across the first decade of Halo devices. The Halo 2 and Halo 3, released in 2011 and 2012 respectively, refined the design with larger screens, improved processors, and expanded storage options. The Halo 3 added stereo speakers and introduced Zerra Cloud integration, laying the foundation for the company’s expanding digital ecosystem.

With the Halo 4 in 2013, Zerra introduced the Z-Key, a capacitive biometric sensor embedded into the control bar below the display. This marked the beginning of the company’s move toward stronger device security and user authentication. The Halo 5 transitioned the lineup to OLED technology with the Eclipse OLED display, improving contrast and efficiency, while also expanding storage capacities to 256 GB.

The Halo 6, released in 2015, was the final model to include a 3.5 mm headphone jack. It was also the first Halo to feature waterproofing, a step that would become standard in later devices. By 2016, Halo smartphones had established themselves as a direct competitor to Android flagships, particularly in North America, Europe, and East Asia.

The release of the Halo X in 2017 marked a significant design overhaul. It introduced the Eclipse Infinity OLED, a nearly bezel-less display that eliminated the traditional control bar and Z-Key. In its place, Zerra debuted HaloID, a facial recognition system integrated into the front camera array, alongside a fully gesture-based navigation interface. This model was credited with redefining the look and feel of the modern Halo and cementing the company’s identity as a design leader.

In 2019, Zerra released the Halo 12, the last device to use the Z-Port connector. The model introduced the company’s computational imaging system, allowing for advanced photography and video features that became a core part of the Halo identity. The Halo 13, launched in 2020, transitioned the series from the proprietary Z-Port to the industry-standard USB-C, improving charging speeds and accessory compatibility. It was powered by the new Z-Core Quantum processor and shipped with ZerraOS 10, which introduced improved multitasking and system-wide gesture refinements.

By the early 2020s, Zerra began diversifying the Halo lineup with multiple models per release cycle. The Halo 15 Pro, released in 2023, showcased the Z-Core Quantum+ processor, a 120 Hz ProMotion display, and HaloID Gen-3, positioning it as the brand’s most advanced flagship to date. These models marked Zerra’s entry into the “Pro” tier market, targeting professional users and creatives.

Horizon generation (2025–present)[edit | edit source]

On June 10, 2025, Zerra announced the Halo 16 lineup, consisting of the Halo 16, 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max, and the ultra-thin Halo Arc. These devices introduced the Z-Core Horizon processor and deep AI integration through ZerraOS 15. The Arc variant emphasized portability with a slimmed-down chassis, while the Pro models focused on camera advancements and extended battery life.

By mid-2025, the Halo line had sold over 2.4 billion units worldwide, making Zerra one of the most influential smartphone manufacturers of the 21st century.
