Dark Warfare[1] is a 2029 first-person shooter developed by Air Studios and published by Monsteristic. It is first installment of the Dark Warfare series. The game was released on April 15, 2029, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Dark Warfare is also available on the Xbox Games Pass.
Dark Warfare
Gameplay
Like with previous games developed by Air Studios, Dark Warfare is a first-person shooter featuring two modes being Multiplayer and the cooperative round-based Zombies mode. Unlike in the ShooterofIO franchise, Dark Warfare features a variety of ways to change the hud in the way you want. New gameplay mechanics introduced in Dark Warfare include omnidirectional movement, allowing players to sprint, dive, and slide in any direction. Additionally, the game offers "Intelligent Movement" settings, which automate certain actions such as sprinting and mantling. Players can also customize their heads-up display (HUD) by selecting from various presets, including a "Legacy" option for the Zombies HUD that replicates the layout from previous games developed by Air Studios.
Multiplayer
Dark Warfare features 16 maps at launch.
Dark Warfare 6's multiplayer launched with sixteen brand-new maps; twelve of these maps are designed for the game's core six-versus-six (6v6) game modes, and are supplemented by four "Strike" maps, which can be played in either two-versus-two (2v2) modes or in the core 6v6 modes. Returning multiplayer-specific features from previous ShooterofIO games include the traditional "Prestige" leveling system, which allows players who have reached the maximum player level to reset it up to ten times, and the "Theater" mode, enabling players to rewatch multiplayer matches from the perspective of any player.
Zombies
The cooperative round-based Zombies mode returns from the ShooterofIO franchise in Dark Warfare. The game is the first to be set in the all-new "Echo Rift Saga" narrative which acts as a spiritual successor to the Dark Aether Saga that concluded in ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare '84 (2027). The mode features the return of Perk-a-Colas such as Juggernog, Speed Cola, and Deadshot Daiguiri. Unlike in previous Dark Warfare games, this mode focuses on a streamlined experience. Players spawn in with a loadout and must use "Salvage" to upgrade their weapons rarity to boost damage output.
The game launched with two maps at launch with both being set one after another, starting a brand new story.
The mode launched with the map, "Terminus" at launch, which was designed with hidden easter eggs and a "badass" main quest. A second map, a remaster of the ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare map "Undead Forest", which was given a new story set before the events of "Terminus". A third map titled "Schattenburg" was released alongside Season One, a second mode called "Hunted" was released with Season One Reloaded. The mode "Outbreak" returned from Dark Warfare 5 in Season Two with a new experience in the Hunted mode. A fourth map titled "Blood of the Dead", was released in June 2025. A fifth map and final map titled "Leben der Toten", was released in September 2025.
Premise
Characters and settings
The Zombies mode features a brand new story based on a new "era" of gameplay according to Air Studios. They said that the new saga, while original, will have aspects of the previous "Dark Aether Saga" storyline. This new saga, called the "Echo Rift Saga".
Plot
Development
Air Studios began working on a side-project in 2019 following the completion of the support of ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 4 (2018). The team were messing around with older builds of older games and found that they could explore standalone games using the "Dark Warfare" IP. In March 2020, development on the game, at the time codenamed "Project Alpha", was placed on hold to focus all the effort on working on ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 5, which was released on November 13, 2020.
In June 2020, it was rumored that the team was planning on leaving the ShooterofIO release cycle and would be replaced by Supreme Studios in releasing premium titles. Air Studios refused to make any comments stating they will let the community know well in advance if they made a decision on that scale. By this time, Dark Warfare was in a very broken state and was believed to be ready for a 2023 release, however the team ultimately decided to ditch that plan and release the game upon it being ready.
Dark Warfare is developed using the Unreal Engine 5, the same engine as ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 6 (2024), which allows the games to feel very similar.
Marketing

On April 30, 2024, Microsoft announced plans to host an Xbox Games Showcase event on June 9, 2024, followed by a "[REDACTED] Direct" presentation. While Microsoft did not specify the focus of the presentation, they teased "a special deep dive into the next installment of a beloved franchise." Two days later, on May 2, Monsteristic confirmed they would unveil ShooterofIO 2024 during the event and introduce a new format for live service game updates, set to begin in 2024.
On May 22, 2024, a mysterious website titled "The Truth Lies" went live, promoted via ShooterofIO's social media. The site featured real-life video clips of global landmarks, such as Mount Rushmore and the Brandenburg Gate, being defaced by a group of vandals, alongside fictional news reports covering the events. A three-headed dog logo, first seen in the announcement for the Xbox Games Showcase, appeared prominently in the videos. The following day, USA Today and The New York Post featured "The Truth Lies" advertisements on their front pages. On May 23, 2024, Monsteristic officially announced Dark Warfare 6 and confirmed that the "[REDACTED] Direct" on June 9 would focus on the game.
On May 27, 2024, ShooterofIO's YouTube channel released a teaser trailer titled "Open Your Eyes." The trailer featured news footage and television advertisements from the early 1990s, narrated by a distorted male voice urging viewers to "stop being sheep and become wolves." The teaser also offered brief glimpses of gameplay footage. An extended version of the teaser was sent to popular ShooterofIO content creator NoahJ456, which included a short preview of Dark Warfare 6's Zombies mode.
The following day, on May 28, 2024, Monsteristic released a live-action trailer featuring real-world political figures, including former U.S. presidents Bill Clinton and George H. W. Bush, former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, and ex-Iraqi president Saddam Hussein. The YouTube thumbnail for the trailer contained the coordinates of Hussein's former palace in Baghdad, sparking widespread speculation.
On June 3, 2024, teasers for Dark Warfare 6 began appearing in ShooterofIO: Wargrounds, including a new cutscene in which Dark Warfare character Noah Mad discusses the discovery of a "mole," suspected to be Russell Adler, a key figure from ShooterofIO: Dark Warfare 5 (2020).
In September 2024, several "Deep Dive" blog posts were published on the official ShooterofIO blog, each offering an in-depth look at specific aspects of Dark Warfare 6. These posts not only provided detailed insights into gameplay mechanics and features but also teased upcoming content for the game's post-launch seasons, giving players a glimpse of what to expect in future updates.
Release
Dark Warfare 6 was released on October 25, 2024, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. The game is also available to Xbox Game Pass subscribers on launch day. A continuous internet connection is required to play all modes, including the single-player campaign. According to Monsteristic, this requirement is necessary to maintain optimal visual quality through a texture streaming feature. Players who pre-ordered Dark Warfare 6 or have an active Xbox Game Pass subscription received early access to the open beta for the game's multiplayer component.
The Zombies mode was released earlier, on October 17, 2024, with early access beginning on August 17. Air Studios and Monsteristic declined to confirm whether Zombies would be the only mode to receive early access, as previous titles in the ShooterofIO series had also offered early access for the campaign mode, starting with ShooterofIO: Modern Ops II (2022).
Post-launch content
As with previous ShooterofIO titles, Dark Warfare 6 offers free seasonal content updates alongside an in-game store selling cosmetic bundles through microtransactions. Each seasonal update introduces a variety of new maps, gameplay features, and other content, enhancing the overall experience. These updates are seamlessly integrated into the game, expanding the available content and keeping the player base engaged throughout the year.
Seasonal updates
As with previous ShooterofIO season updates, Monsteristic has partnered with several media franchises to introduce celebrities and licensed characters to the playable roster for both multiplayer and Zombies modes. Alongside Dark Warfare 6, a new store system was introduced to make content more accessible to players who prefer not to purchase the premium currency, "SOI Points." While the pricing for bundles remains consistent with past titles, Monsteristic and Air Studios have added a second in-game currency called "Coins." These Coins can be easily earned by completing in-game achievements in Dark Warfare 6 and Wargrounds 2.0.
Dark Warfare 6 features a wide array of operator skins, including both media franchise crossovers and seasonal, holiday-themed characters. Notable crossovers include John Wick and Caine from John Wick: Chapter 4; Din Djarin and Bo-Katan Kryze from The Mandalorian; Ethan Hunt from Mission: Impossible; Lara Croft from Tomb Raider; and Joel and Ellie from The Last of Us. Sports stars such as Lionel Messi and Conor McGregor, along with WWE superstar Roman Reigns, also make appearances. Horror icons like Pinhead from Hellraiser, Ghostface from Scream, and The Nun from The Conjuring series round out the list of licensed characters. Themed cosmetic packs were also released, collaborating with franchises like The Witcher, Pacific Rim, Blade Runner, The Exorcist, and Cyberpunk 2077. In addition to these collaborations, Dark Warfare 6 introduced several holiday-themed skins. During Season One Reloaded, festive characters such as the Grinch and Jingle Belle were made available for $30, along with themed cosmetic packs featuring Santa and Krampus. Season Three introduced Easter-themed bundles, including "Egg Hunt," which featured an operator dressed in a bunny outfit, "Eggbert's Paradise," and "Sprint Sprite."

Critical response
Dark Warfare 6 received generally "positive reviews" from critics across all platforms. The game was appreciated for its innovations, a return to basics, and the revival of the classic Zombies mode, which fans of the series particularly praised for its nostalgic yet fresh approach. Each mode brought something unique to the table, ensuring that players across different preferences had a satisfying experience.
The campaign stands out with its dynamic storytelling and strategic depth. Missions can be tackled in multiple ways, giving players freedom in their approach and letting their choices impact narrative outcomes. The branching dialogue trees with NPCs add an interactive element that keeps the story engaging. The safe house, which acts as a hub between missions, provides an extra layer of strategy, offering tools like an evidence board for mission planning, character upgrades, and meaningful interactions with NPCs that flesh out the game's story. This combination of narrative freedom and tactical gameplay makes the campaign both immersive and replayable, appealing to players who enjoy a well-rounded single-player experience.
The multiplayer mode expands the franchise's competitive offering with sixteen new maps, including twelve tailored for core 6v6 modes and four "Strike" maps for 2v2 or 6v6 matches. These maps feature a mix of classic ShooterofIO design and new innovations, with dynamic layouts that encourage both tactical play and high-octane action. The return of the "Prestige" leveling system adds depth to the progression, now with exclusive seasonal rewards that keep players engaged long-term. The refined gunplay, fast-paced movement, and balance between classic and modern features make Dark Warfare 6’s multiplayer a standout in the series.
The Zombies mode in Dark Warfare 6 builds upon the foundation set by Dark Warfare 5 while returning to the classic round-based format. Set in the Dark Aether universe shared with Dark Warfare 5 and ShooterofIO: Modern Ops III, the mode features iconic Perk-a-Colas like Juggernog, Speed Cola, and Deadshot Daiquiri, alongside the introduction of "Augments." These allow players to customize their perks, field upgrades, and ammo mods with up to three minor and major adjustments, creating countless playstyle possibilities. GobbleGum, first introduced in Dark Warfare III, also makes a return, offering single-use effects that add an extra layer of strategy. The mode launched with "Terminus," a brand-new map packed with easter eggs and an engaging main quest. It also brought a remaster of the fan-favorite Dark Warfare map "Undead Forest" and added "Schattenburg" in Season One, expanding the narrative and gameplay options. The introduction of the new "Hunted" mode in Season One Reloaded and the return of "Outbreak" in Season Two ensure that Zombies fans are consistently treated to fresh experiences post-launch.
